iphone suddenly stopped playing sms sounds all other sounds work

Its an iphone 3gs, just upgraded to 4.2.1

For somereason the SMs sound doesnt play on an incomming sms

Email sounds, ringtones all work fine, even when i go in to seeetings -> sound _> sms sounds , i can cycle through all the sounds avallible, and they all play, but when i set one, exit, it doesnt play on an incomming sms..

any ideas?

Perhaps, it would be easier if you tell us what you have tried.

did you try picking different sounds for the sms notifications?
After doing this do the sounds still not work?
Try restarting the IPhone.

I get this sometimes on my 3G if someone replies back to me instantly then i get no sms tone but if theres a delay in someone replying then i will get a tone but i just put it down to the sluggishness of the 3G
