Scenario: I currently have the iPhone4, my wife has the iPhone 3G. I pre-ordered the iPhone4s, but did the pre-order on my wife's account (but I paid for the upgrade).

My plan is to give my wife my iPhone 4 and I will have the upgraded iPhone4S. From a SIM card perspective, all I need to do is take the SIM card out of my iPhone4, put it in the iPhone 4s when it arrives. Will the iPhone 4s come with a new/blank SIM card? If so, I just put that in my old iPhone 4 that I'm giving to my wife and go through the normal activation, right? I just want to make sure I have this straight.

Moving your micro SIM to the iPhone 4S will work with no problem at all.

Activating the "blank" micro SIM that arrives in the iPhone 4 should work too in theory, but you may run into activation issues if your wife already has an activated SIM card in another phone. If it doesn't work for whatever reason, contact your carrier. It's something easy to fix.

To update this thread, it worked

- Updated the old 3G and 4.
- Activated new iPhone4s with new SIM card that was tied to my wife's #
- After it activated, swapped SIM from iPhone4s to 4

Everything worked liked a charm. The SIM even activated on the first try!

Thank you for your update, I'm going try the same way.

Hi, I have a question that is similar to yours. I currently have the iphone 4.

Currently, I'm not eligible for an upgrade, but one of my family member is.

Can I use my family members upgrade to get the iphone 4s? That family member currently has no data plan... and i know that when you order it... it will ask you to pick a data plan... So what do I do if it is possible to use my family member's upgrade?

Basically, I want to use my family member's upgrade to get the iphone 4s, while that family member plans to continue to use their current phone with no data on it. Is this possible and what would be the procedures?

Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure on that one as that's a bit different than my situation. My wife already had an existing data plan, so I'm not sure what would happen in your scenario. I would *guess* that you would be able to do the SIM swap procedure as I did above, but you'd definitely need to buy a data plan. I would recommend calling AT&T and have them confirm what to do in your scenario.
