Is anyone else having issues with rings or unlocking sounds that just don't happen. Mostly with SMS or unlocking the phone do I not hear it. Sound is all the way up and yet I don't hear the SMS tone or when I unlock my phone. Also, I'm pretty sure (can't be positive) that my actual ringtone doesn't sound. Is anyone else having any sort of issues like this?

Are you sure the vibrate button isn't in the vibrate position? I noticed my system sounds and typing sounds don't work when its in vibrate

I am also having the same issue. After I listen to my iPod, and I completely exit out of it, my SMS incoming tone doesn't work - the other SMS tones seems to be alright mostly just effecting the "incoming". I do restart and it works again, but it isn't t complete fix. It happens over and over... So I am not sure if it is the phone, or a software glitch.

Same problem happened one time on my wifes white Iphone and once on my black one. Some sounds worked, some didn't. It was only after either being in an app or in the Ipod portion. Turning off and on the phone fixed them both. Haven't seen the problem again, but chalked it up to buggy 2.0 software.

2.0 Firmware or iPhone 3G?

I'm also having an issue with the 'Sounds.'

Try this, let me know if you guys and gals have the same problem.

  1. Go to 'Settings' > 'Sounds'
  2. Under the ring section, make sure the volume is set to the max.
  3. Activate the vibrate function on the side notch of the phone.
  4. Wait a few minutes.
  5. Take your phone off vibrate/silent.
  6. Go back to 'Settings' > 'Sounds'
  7. Check the volume level. Every single time, it goes back to the default middle-level setting.

I'm going to check my fiancee's iPhone EDGE to see if she's having the same problem. If so, it's obviously an issue with the firmware. If not, it's something with the 3G iPhone.

My 3G Iphone does the same thing. I didn't know what was causing it to default back. But now that I have switch to vibrate and then back, that does it some of the time, but not everytime.

Mine seems to be fine, volume stays as it was originally set to before the silent switch is activated. My ringtone is Marimba - although that shouldn't make a difference?

Same problem here. All was well for the first week, now the unlock and keypad sounds do not work.

I love the phone otherwise, but as a new smart phone owner and a new iPhone owner, I'm pretty disappointed with the hassle required to buy this phone only to have issues with it within the first two weeks.

Sadly, most of us have come to accept this as the norm when dealing with all new computer products.

Just checked, phone does not ring for incoming call either. Just visual signs phone is ringing. Oh the joys.

Have the phones that are not functioning properly been Jailbroken / Modded? I Jailbroke my 2G iPhone and experienced similar issues. To fix I did a set to factory defaults on the phone, my backgrounds / apps stayed the same, it just reset all my sounds and network settings.

I'm having the same problem. None of my sounds work except the ringer. I tried turning the phone on and off, and I even did a full restore. Nothing worked. I'm out of town right now, but I'm thinking of taking it to an Apple Store next week to see if they can fix it with a restore there.

Update on my issue...

So as I stated before I would listen to the iPod, and completely exit and do something else and I was only experiencing the "incoming" SMS tone not working. Last night I was listening to the iPod, and a incoming SMS came in - stopped my music completely. I ignored the SMS and yet the iPod would not play music through my headphones. I removed the headphones and it would play out loud. I rebooted, and yes of course everything seemed to be back to normal. This morning I have done nothing with my iPhone except remove it from charging, and then plugged it into my car system via the monster cable and viola! Again it played for a few seconds, then nothing....... I rebooted and it is working again. I am really leaning on that there is something defective with my earphone jack... I am going to call Apple today, I don't live near an Apple store, and I am not sure if ATT would do a return for me. Any ideas would be appreciated.

**To answer above, no my phone is not jailbroken, or modified in any way. Also I have done a full restore/backup 3 times in the last week.**

Yes.. this is happening to me and I have restored and I know my settings are all correct

Just happened a minute ago when my mom called.. if i hadn't had the phone sitting in front of me i never would have known she was calling.

i've only really noticed it with incoming phone calls tho

My sound also periodically just quits working...after a restart it's fine again. Yet another thing I hope gets fixed in the first 2.0 firmware update. Love my iPhone, but the 2.0 bug list is pretty long. If past history is any indication we should see an update soon.

Agree with this. White 16gb phone. Sometimes the lock/unlock sounds just decide to stop working. A reset always fixes it, but it's kind of annoying. Too many bugs in 2.0's pants, hopefully Jobs will administer some antibiotics. :D

Ditto. Restart works most of the time, but what a pain in the arse.

And yet another update...

Along with the other "sound" issues I am having, I have a new one to add. This morning I was using my iPhone with the monster cable to my car, listening to a playlist. I received a text message, and the music "skipped" like a record (the only way I can describe it) and then completely shut down my ipod. When I went back into the ipod function, it was like my whole ipod had been reset. Meaning ~ it didn't pause where I was or even what playlist I was in, it reset it all the way back to the list of playlists!

I had called Apple about a week ago.. and their fix was to insert my headphones into the jack "6" times, when I asked why... Their reply was because the inside of the jack was dirty, don't get me wrong, but if it was dirty shouldn't I NOT push it in and out? Any way, that didn't solve my problem. They told me then to do a complete back up and restore.. And if my problem comes back to call.

I guess I am at the point of calling again. *blah* I love my iPhone, but I am not in love with rebooting, restoring, re-everythinging... all the time!

Now it has happened to me too!!!

I lost sound after installing Solitaire Top 3.

A quick reset seems to have fixed the problem for now.... Could it be 3rd party app related???

Yesterday I did a reset (Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Settings) because of another issue (more on that in another thread!) and magically my sounds returned. I say "magically" because I've done the reset before -- and several restores -- with zero results. I don't know how long it will last, though.

Add me to the list. 2.0, Edge iPhone. Vibration function definitely not on. Not sure what triggers it, it seems to fix itself on its own after some time, but a restart definitely fixes it.

Everyone, send in a bug report. Increase the chance of it being fixed sooner.

Same problem when performing the above steps, but worse. My ringer volume goes to zero, and can only tell if I am getting a call if I visually keep an eye on the phone. I am missing a ton of calls because of this. This is happening on a daily basis.

same issue with the iPhone 4

I had the exact same problem with the iPhone 4: all the system sounds used to die off after the phone was switched on for around 5-6 days and would only come back on after a reboot. I took it to the local Apple Store, and they replaced it with a new phone after hearing the story for 5 minutes. I've had the new phone for just a few hours now, so I don't know if the issue has been resolved, but I am just wondering if this is a hardware fault? And how common is it?

FIXED MINE..... ish

I say "ish" because I cannot say it wont happen again...
The only sounds that worked on my jailbroken iPhone was when someone called me.
This was not because I jailbroke it as that was monthes ago.

I tried lots of different things but did not want to reset then have to jailbreak again.
I found that it still made all the sounds through headphones but not when i took them out... (I usually just pull the headphones out when the phone is locked to stop the music) so what i did was...

headphones in,
ipod,
play,
lock,
unlock,
stop/pause,
headphones out,
menu button,
lock....
Done :D There is probably a much more simplified way but that is what i did. I think maybe the phone was still sending the sounds to the headphones or something :/ Hope it helps
