Maybe these "hidden" pictures are actually people accidently taking a screen shot of there phone? Maybe that's why there's that quick light flash that someone mentioned earlier in the thread.

The Wired story states that the snapshot is only used during an app's quit phase. After that it's deleted.

The only way to retrieve the snapshot would be through some kind of deleted file recovery software. Never heard of anyhing like this for the iPhone.
