My friend briefly dropped her iPhone 13 in a toilet and then cleaned it with hand sanitizer. She got an alert not to charge it for a bit but it seems otherwise OK. Any ideas how that would affect the trade-in value? TIA.

Depends where she trades it in. If she takes it to an Apple store, they'll inspect it for physical damage then run a hardware diagnostic check and as long as it passes they'll accept it. If she uses an 3rd party trade in then there's no guarantees

Given the water resistance rating she’s probably fine. I doubt some toilet water and a bit of sanitizer is gonna trigger the water indicator.

She usually goes direct with Apple. I assumed Apple would see the dunking in the system log. It's possible it's under AppleCare (she's not sure). I guess she'll just have to see what they say.

Tell her that if pressed, the iPhone was dropped "in water" - not in the toilet. Urine/feces are considered "contaminants" and could prevent it from being traded in or even serviced at all.

They might not be that strict... but the less said, the better ;)

I agree but she may blurt it out. I go by the maxim that the less said, the better. :)

This is the best approach. Just hand them the phone and don't volunteer any information unless they bring something up.. As long as everything looks and performs normally she shouldn't have any issues with the trade in

But I assume it is still listed in the system log.

Possible, but I’ve never heard of it.

Keep in mind iPhone 13 is marketed as water resistant and having water in the Lightning port is acceptable. Having water inside the device is not.

I took a water damaged 12 mini in, they just turned it on and played with it for 5 mins and it worked during that time (was a bit stressful watching as the screen had an intermittent problem!). Walked out with a 13 mini and had full trade in value for the 12.

Right. But for some reason they still take offense if we do dunk them. :)
