I want to trade in my iPhone 6 towards an X. If I buy the X online (paying full price) for in-store pickup, will Apple let me do the trade when I pick up my X and apply the credit toward the purchase price, or would I have to accept a store credit if I pay online first and then do the trade in-store? Any insights appreciated!

They'll let you do the trade in once you get to the store. However, I'm not sure if they can apply the credit towards your purchase anymore since most likely they already charged you before you pick up the phone. You can get it as a Apple Store gift card or I believe you can get it back to your bank account as a separate credit.
You will get a store credit. We had this exact same circumstance with my son's phone. It's because you've already paid.
