So I own a ton of apple products but I'm currently wonder why if my Apple Watch can unlock my MacBook Pro why can't my Apple Watch unlock my IphoneX? It really all that different? I mean it's paired it knows my watch is nearby.

I'm not saying that it should all be like that but it should be an option that I (The User) can choose to have or not to have.

Perhaps the Bluetooth Range is so good now that I could be at another part of the home and someone could unlock it leading to issues, but I don't know it could be implemented so that the strength of that signal has to be at a certain level for it to work. I have not tested the range of the the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch unlock feature but perhaps I along with a friend will try to see what that range really is.

Why would you need your watch to unlock your iPhone? anything you do on your iPhone is going to require you holding it in which case either touchID or faceID can easily unlock it for you. The only reason I can think of why you would want to unlock your iPhone when not holding it would be for having Siri do something that it can't do while locked, but I would think Siri on your watch would be able to do that anyway, so you wouldn't need to unlock it.

I could use your exact statement on my MacBook Pro could I not? My MacBook Pro has Touch ID, password input, yet my watch still unlocks it. Why would I ever need it? Yet here we are and I have it... And I even have Touch ID on the system...

The watch also notifies you once you've unlocked the MacBook so the Phone could still do that as well. It could vibrate and inform you that your phone has been unlocked.

Not every mac that you can unlock with your watch has touchID, and it is easier to leave the feature in for the ones that do than specifically write them out. For those who have the MBP with touchID there is much less benefit from the feature.

Umm could I not say the same about every iPhone then? could I not say "not every iPhone has face recognition or TouchId?" And yes iPhone 5's are still running around out there

It wouldn’t be compatible with an iPhone 5 then as the latest watch os requires iOS 11 and the series 3 requires an iPhone 5S or newer.

So your point is moot. It’s not a feature for security reasons.

Well your iPhone can unlock your watch so if we could activate the reverse option as well....I'm thinking black hole.

As the poster below you said those phones are not compatible with the Watch anyway, so yes every phone that is compatible with the watch has either touchID or faceID.
