iPhone Upgrade Program Activation

Just got my iPhone X through the Apple Annual Upgrade Program in the mail. Got everything setup, but interestingly it didn't ask me about activation. I notice the sim is still not setup after the iPhone setup is done. So I just pop in the sim from my old iPhone, and everything just works.

Is this the correct way to activate a new iPhone? Do I just discard the sim that came with the new phone?
I have T-Mobile.
