iPhone 11 Pro iPhone Upgrade Program - Necessary Steps?

Am I supposed to be doing something to cancel my previous loan? I remember when I upgraded from X to XS, everything was automatic. I got my 11 Pro but my loan from XS hasn't been cancelled yet. Did something change?

As long as you have the old device to give back to Apple nothing else is required at your end as far as I know.

That's correct. When Apple checks your old phone back in the loan will automatically be cancelled.
