We had no penalty! We got our 6s phones on launch day last year in the upgrade program. We've paid 12 months worth by now, so were eligible for a new phone on launch day this year. Pre-ordered 2 black phones (1 jet and one matte) and will pick them up next Friday and trade in our old phones.

We like being able to upgrade yearly. It was pretty straightforward ordering them on the app with the upgrade program. So far, we're happy with it.

Yes. But if you now start your new set of 12 payments in October or November, when next September rolls around you either have to fork out the extra cash to "catch up" on your payments and enable the upgrade, or wait until October or November again. When you actually begin your payments is very key.
Why is it such a big deal to make two or three payments in the last month (or whichever) instead of one in order to enable upgrade eligibility? It's definitely cheaper than having to pay full price in one payment.

We are? Curious. I live in a world where none of the above is true.

So what does this mean for someone like me who just signed up and is getting a launch phone on the 16th and already paid for a month.

Will I be able to get a launch day phone next year or no?

I don't see why not. We got ours launch day last year and have pre-ordered new ones at the Apple store next Friday where we'll trade in our current ones. You've paid for a month, so next September, you'll have paid for 12 months, and be eligible for an upgrade. I don't get what penalty people are talking about.

Because you are not everyone?

It sounds like you simply got lucky, as many, if not most, IUP customers didn't get their first choice in terms of model/delivery date. What if you don't get as lucky next year?

It's extra bad if you don't live near an Apple Store. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and I have to fly to Honolulu to jump through Apple's hoops... I had to forego the jet black option because it was not even available for reservation in Hawaii at all (nor a few dozen other states), and I have to book plane tickets to get to the store so I can't wait a while and try for a same-day reservation.

The least they could have done is add a disclaimer that it's not available in all states for launch day. That's pretty crappy...

I love on Oahu, I'm gonna camp out the night before to get first in line. Hope to see you there

I applied, on two different days technically, for two phones under the Apple Upgrade Program. Both were approved and I used the same credit card for both.

Will I have two hard hits on my credit report or once Citizen's learned about me from the first phone, would they not do another hard pull for the second phone?

Thanks!

Both 7plus blacks were immediately sold out so now I have to take a white phone if I want it at launch. Never had a white face phone before
They're as beautiful (and they stay that way) as the matt black ones or the current black ones from the 6 line.

1.Just pay off your AUP loan
2. Go set up a new AUP starting in October/November when the phones are a bit more widely available
3. Sell your previous iphone
4. Accept that to make AUP cost effective you need to upgrade on your 12th payment which is best done after launch to avoid having to make a 13th payment.

Apple knows exactly what they're doing. Restricting stock for existing IUP customers and allocating more for other purchase methods will ensure higher profits.

Yeah that's an option, but no one could have known this is how Apple would do a disservice to its IUP customers until now. Live and learn.
Apple does what's best for them while spinning a warm fuzzy story about putting the customer first. The Masters of marketing they've built quite the empire.

I went ahead and reserved the silver 128 7+ for launch day. At first I was bummed that I couldn't get the matte black but now I'm looking forward to my first white phone. :)

I try to flip between them. The 5s white looked prettier than the 4s black that I had. And black was the color to go for in my opinion. My iPads I have white as well. The next one will be black again.

The 7 plus in matte black looks quite pretty, if I go for the 7s, it will be that colour I hope.

That's nice that you have no penalty but the point of the thread is MANY do. I am also part of the IUP (I was last year, paid phone off and sold it), I signed up again as new this year. My scheduled delivery date is 10/4-10/10 (I pre-ordered at 12:15 PST). The app and website did not work for me until that time. It's super lame.....

Is it the end of the world that for next year I will have to make 1 extra payment to get it on launch day, NO. But is it completely ridiculous that this program has issues...YES! Apple didn't think this out to well.....

How this turned out definitely sours the appeal of the Apple program, why pay more money (then the carriers) and then not have the ability to upgrade on day 1.

Yes the fact that we have to rely on store inventory definitely limits our choices. Hopefully next year they'll allow the phones to be shipped to us widening the availability.

Pretty much stinks that they advertise that you get to upgrade every year. But in reality, those in the program still have to fight the pre-order scramble, go INTO the store and for some (depending on which phone they choose), ship dates are months away. Therefore you are having to make extra payments on it. Pretty messed up....

In addition having to once again play the "credit check roulette " and roll the dice on whether or not you'll be approved. I'm hoping things change next year but I'm skeptical.

i dont think they ever said anything that you would get a vip status and be priviledged to get the new phone first when launched.

It's not about privilege it's about fairness. Even the playing field of availability between people buying shipped phones and people upgrading through IUP.

Their point of contention is not VIP status but having equal access to the same stock that new IUP and other customers get. It appears that Apple has severely limited the stock for existing IUP customers.

This has nothing to do with VIP or privilege. It has everything to do with how Apple has grossly mismanaged this program. They severely limited stock for existing IUP members, and the entire process is needlessly complex and antiquated, especially for one of the world's most advanced companies. It's pretty bad when the carriers, who don't have the greatest reputation to say the least, can deliver a better experience with an annual upgrade program.
