Iphone upgrade program trade in question

If I join the IUP program and want to trade in my phone while I’m at the apple store. Do you give up your phone on the spot there or do you ship it in somewhere? If I buy the X and don’t like it (very doubtful) do I get my original phone back or am I stuck with it?

I ask since if you order on Verizon’s website you have some time to trade your phone in.

You leave the phone with them on the spot. They go through turning off Find my iPhone, and wiping all settings, and they keep it. If you return the new phone, you don't get your old one back.
