Not sure if this is a common issue, but since the 3.0.1 firmware update, I've noticed the Usage under Settings > General has been increasing even when the phone has been on sleep.

I upgraded to 3.1, thinking that this update would fix this issue, but the problem still occurs. I also tried a restore from backup, still no dice. I do have MobileMe and Push is on to fetch from their servers. Is this the reason why Usage has been increasing. It currently says 7 hours of usage.

I've never noticed this issue with previous firmwares.

Anyone have any similar issues, better still, any fixes?

I too just noticed this problem. When my iPhone is in sleep mode the "Usage" number becomes larger. In other words my iPhone is being used by an application or applications while it is sleeping. Of course this has an impact on the battery as well. Overnight (8 hours) in sleep mode my iPhone recorded an additional 39 minutes of "usage" and my battery went from 79% to 50% on my 3GS! I do have Bluetooth, Location Services, 3G and Notification turned on. I do NOT have Push turned on. Possibly the services are impacting the battery and generating the usage figures.

Anyone else looked at this issue?

yea got this issue as well on my 3G (3.0)

the solution for me is to turned off either push notification or the push mail...

also for me while having this issue the battery drops very badly, maybe its because the network in my country is crap as hell

If you have bluetooth running - it's going to periodically check to see what and if it's connected to anything. Same thing with 3g/edge.

39 minutes seems a bit high for those periodic checks - but I don't know how often it does. But clearly there will be SOME usage in sleep mode. Was it retreiving email during those 8 hours via a fetch interval as well?

Try it with Bluetooth and Notification (and Push/Fetch) turned off.

I found that Bluetooth, with the iPhone trying to stay in contact with a handfree headset out in the car on the driveway, seemed to be eating battery life.

I've had very occasional problems where it appears that my 3GS is drawing power even though it's in sleep mode. It does not appear to matter if Push is on or off (it happens with both) or of Location Services are on or off. This has only happened to me about half a dozen times since I got my phone in mid-June, but it's been annoying when it did happen. It almost appears as if some application is still running in the background and running down the power (I have no idea if that's what's actually happening or not).

Im having the same issue, my usages increases by hours during sleep and the battery is dying with next to nothing usage in 10 hours!! using the new 3.1.2 firmware! :(
