hehe. yeah, I've had the same thing from Siri, my google smart speaker and Alexa. Out of nowhere they would be asking for clarification or such when I never spoke to them in the first place

Europe and UK should be taking RCS seriously and pushing hard for it. We basically have the same problem that the US does with messaging - it's just that the chat monopoly is WhatsApp rather than Messages.
I guess WhatsApp being an end to end encrypted messenger is miles better than non E2EE systems like SMS and RCS.

RCS on Android does support E2EE, as an extension to the base RCS standard. But that does mean that interoperable RCS messages (eg: between an Android and Apple devices) are not encrypted.

Apple have indicated they are working with the GSMA to add standardised, interoperable E2EE to the RCS spec.

Should be. Many will be updating to try out Apple Intelligence. I will be updating my devices in the coming days.

The image conversion bug hasn't been fixed in iOS 18.1 yet. 48MP ProRAW to 48MP HEIC/JPG batch conversion converts only to 12MP files, instead of 48MP: Quick Actions>Convert Image>File Format: HEIF>Image Size: Original

I tried the 18.1 rc and it didn’t help the bugs ive been experiencing with battery life and CarPlay disconnects.

So I returned to 17.1 and it’s a much smoother os.
Id say lots are updating quickly because of bugs - not AI.

I am not sure if it's because I have an iPhone 12 but these AI features seem totally hidden to me. I literally see nothing different so either they aren't there or apple did a really bad job at making them stand out

Against my better judgment, I installed 18.1, and the first thing I noticed was that none of the bugs that have been annoying me were fixed. I'm still experiencing latency and the erratic cursor, which reminds me of how the Mac used to be 15 years ago. Well, at least Apple is consistent. 🤷‍♂️

I have two iPhone 13 Pro Max phones that I will keep using for another 1-2 years. One is on iOS 16 and is jailbroken and the other is on iOS 17.3. Can get Apples AI on these if I did upgrade so I'm in no hurry.

I have 18.1 on 4 devices and none of them have latencies or erratic cursors.

This tells me that many of the posts where android folks are saying “My iPhone friends aren’t updating to 18. I can tell because they’re not using RCS.” No, they intentionally turned it off. :) Who knows why? :D
Most of the people I know couldn't tell you the difference between RCS and SMS or what any of them even mean.

Upgraded all devices to 18.1 and airpods pro to newest firmware so I could do hearing tests, try out apple AI. Although I haven’t tried apple AI yet as I’d like to do chatgpt type stuff. I had to sign up for it on my ipad and was given access an hour later.

I'm on an iPhone 14PM so no AI for me. I updated quickly for the RCS, which is only partially working, and the ability to arrange icons on the screen where I want them, which is pretty wonky at best. Overall it's been a good update and made my old phone feel like new again.

I held until 18.1 this time. It has been a good upgrade for my iPhone 15 Pro Max. Even fixed issues I was having with iOS 17 too… which I didn’t expect.

Besides the reworked control center and RCS finally you mentioned with 18.1, there is also the Call Recording, and iPhone mirror or display your iPhone screen right on your Mac running 15.1 so you can view and use it without lifting your phone that is not related to AI at all for your 14PM. ;)

Apple intelligence had been a let down. Siri is still unusable garbage.
We are not there yet obviously, but its a touch better then with 17.x, 18.0

18.1 Siri changes (late October)
  • Siri is smart enough to understand questions if you stop and correct yourself, and it can handle follow-up questions without you having to restate what you're asking about. Siri can also provide troubleshooting about Apple products in iOS 18.1
18.2 Siri Changes (December)
  • Integration with ChatGPT - allows you to optionally allow Siri to use ChatGPT for answers
18.4 Siri changes (March)
  • Overhauled Siri assistant using AI with better contextual and personalized responses.

i don’t need AI.

i have been doing great so far without any of these big data kraken…

the hype is over.
…said the person who hasn’t a clue on how to use AI and how it can massively increase productivity and knowledge.

I imagine you said the same on the advent of broadband. I bet you did just fine with your 28.8k dial-up modem.

Everyone upgrading because iOS 18 supports RCS text messaging. Now their Android-using friends and family members won't feel like third-class citizens

Honestly this is actually probably one of the bigger reasons.

Though many of them, like myself, were disappointed to find out that their MVNO doesn't support it and/or that their Android using friends are not using the one and only Android app that supports RCS, Google Messages.

In my circle nobody even talked about RCS. YMMV. It was about the features in iOS 18.1 including apple intelligence.
