This is important:

iPod and iPhone can display video LARGER THAN 640x480.
You do not need to worry about exceeding one of those constrains.

iPod and iPhone will play any video of supported format with the following size guideline:

If the horizontal resolution (in pixel) = W, the vertical resolution = H, as long as (H/16) x (W/16) < or = 1200, then you will be fine.

For example, for a VGA resolution (640x480), you got W = 640, H = 480, thus 640/16 x 480/16 = 40 x 30 = 1200.

So if one of your constrain (such as the width of a 720x410 movie) exceeds the documented limit of 640, as long your vertical constrain remain small, you will be fine.

Therefore, you can always use the largest (original) resolution in HandBrake when decoding your DVD (which usually come in 720x4xx format) without worrying about playback problem.

Trust me, this is documented in MacWorld and I have tons of videos over 640 width playing on my iPhone.

Is this as long as the bitrate is Max of 1500?

How about purchased Movies on iTunes. I've got some I've purchase for AppleTV and they are massive. I think Pirates of the Caribbean is 1.7 gigs. Can they converted and can it be done without losing the integrity of the original?

What happened to the thread "Full iPhone Guide - How to rip DVD..."? It had a couple of programs listed (Avex or Cucusoft and another). I would like to try the other one that I don't have or any other suggestions (Vista compatible).

I'm using the iPod settings (h.264) and am cranking down bitrate to 500 kbps. I've never done this before so am not sure whether these settings make sense.

do it at 512kbps. more rounded....2^9 :)

yea iphone still only supports 640x480, max of 2.5mbps in mp4, h.264 is only 768kbps (or is it 1.5mbps???) neway, it all says on the apple site.

Wouldn't it make sense for Apple to have two versions of a movie ready for download, one in full format and one in iPhone format? If you purchase the movie you have access to both, and don't have to convert it using third party software.

I have converted 125 of my movies to iphone size. approximately 250 megs a piece for a 2ish hour movie. quality is great on iphone, terrible on ANYTHING else. I used visual hub. great proggie by the way. it takes about 12 minutes per movie. I used my already pre-ripped movies that were in h.264 apple tv format at 2-3 gigs per movie, down to 250 megs per movie for the iphone, I created a separate iphone library as well.
Good luck everyone! I love my iphone!

wow..that sounds amazing.. if they are playing great at that size, what video resolution are you using? And would anyone be able to create a tutorial or guide for this, that would be amazing.. since i bet that a lot of people want to either convert video to put it on the iphone, or rip dvd to put it on the iphone

thanks!

That's exactly what we need.

I would like to throw in my useless info here.

I've used FFMPEGX, Handbrake, Mac the Ripper and have had good luck with them. Though springing for the FULL VERSION of FFMPEG wasn't worth the $ in that it will not do a full DVD extract.

But now I just use VLC -- it is my ABSOLUTE preferred video player - and it's Transcode feature is great. Using FFMPEG I had choppy frames, lost sync with audio, ect when transcoding from XXX to H264. Using VLC I move it directly to H264 and drop it into itunes and I'm happy.

Just did an episode of lost from my season 2 DVD and it took about 30 minutes start to finish. 24" Imac C2D 2.16

My other favorite aspect of VLC is the ability to grab internet radio, as I don't have access at work, so I grab a nights worth of tunes and listen to them the next day on my Treo. (which has since been replaced)

I hope this helps. I just did it real quick

But it is very simple, so it shouldn't be a problem. enjoy. PS I hope many people find this useful.

So a good size for movies is about 250mgs... what about tv shows, aka, the 20 min tv shows, and the 44 minute tv shows.

Any input or ideas would be great. Looks like visual hub is a great program.

How did you get this working to pull out an episode? I'm trying to pull out a movie off a dvd and the transcribe thing keeps doing the menu. I am using the transcribe wizard.. and it keeps coming up with errors. How did you get yours to work?

Really nice of you to do this and I can't wait to try it out. Do I need to buy Visual Hub to do this?

Right now I use Handbrake and use iPod settings so the movie will work on my Apple TV and iPod. It usually take a LONG time to convert though and movies are usually about 1GB, so 250mb sounds great for the iPhone... I'm assuming they look like crap on Apple TV though huh? Guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. :p

yea, they come out about the quality of a higher end youtube video.
you do have to buy visual hub, although there is isquint? i belive that is similar and free.

What about using Quicktime to export a video file to iPod format?

Or converting to iPod within iTunes?

How do those two methods (they may actually be the same) compare to handbrake, visualhub, and ffmpegx?

im new to this converting thing. so all i need to do is get one of these converting software. and then i choose a file(can i use purchased iTunes movies and tv shows?) and then convert them to a certain size? can the size be reduced? will the quality stay the same? sorry im new to doing this. if anyone can explain it would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

for PC users I swear by mpeg streamclip. I have been using it ever since i got the ATV and now for iphone its just as useful.

http://www.squared5.com/

it also works for video ipod but i usually use the videora ipod converter because its much faster.

for the screen size, I think encoding video at 1500kbps bitrate is a waste of disk space.

I encode my movies for itv as well as th iPhone, so I need a huh bitrate. I would love to get full ad on the iPhone (848x480)

I tried ripping a two hour dvd on Handbrake on my MacBook (2GHz, 2G RAM) and it started out fast enough, and then slowed WAY down at about 15% complete and showed 6+ hours to completion. Is this really how long it takes? I was using the iPod preset.

no no no tahts not how long it should take at all!!!! with ur computer youd b looking at 1.5hrs max... there could have been an error with the dvd (scratch, I/O error) id try ripping with mac the ripper (version 3 UB is out) and then trying to do it from there

I need to rip videos optimized for my iphone quickly. How can I do this? Waiting 3 hours for a movie to rip is not how I would prefer doing this.
