I'm on vacation and brought along my 80GB ipod video (loaded with TV Shows) and my iphone (which I rented a few movies on.)

I brought my Apple Component AV Cable and my girlfriend's Apple Comoposite AV cable. (I wasn't sure which quality of TV we'd have here.)

TV is an older one, I hooked up the Composite (Yellow - Red/White) to the tv. We watched a few episodes of the Office (off the 80gb 5.5Gen) earlier without a problem.

Just a few minutes ago, I tried to connect the iphone, and it gave the "not designed for iphone" / airplane mode prompt. I can choose "yes" or "no" - I've tried both and it refuses to output video to the TV.

I'm extra peeved because it's a video rental and I just started the 24h countdown.

Anyone got any suggestions while I wait on the completely not-helpful Apple support person to pass me to Level Two?

The iPhone 3G requires a cable that has a chip on it. I purchased one that didn't work before discovering this, now I have one that works.

It's the dock connector cable: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB129LL/A#overview

It worked fine with both our phones at her house.

And they're both first gen iphones.

Now the level one rep just disconnected me (instead of transferring me to a level two).

don't worry this is a common problem
    I'll try explain it

There are three kind of cables that you can connect to the iPhone

    1) the first type simple does not work, no video ouput and the cable will just say that the iPhone does not support the cable

    2) the second type will play a movie for about 60-90 seconds, eventually it will stop sending the video out signal and tell you that the accesorry a not supported. This is typical of the cheap av cables you can buy on eBay right now.

    3) The third type of cable works, and works most of the time but ocasionally it will stop sending out the video signal. My theory is that it's a loose connection. In order to restore the video out signal you will need to hard reset your iPhone (hold power and home button for 10 seconds)

You have the third type...however I tried the apple av cables and they only worked on my livingroom LCD and not the LCD in my car. So you may be out of luck

I've tried about 5 different cables with my 3g iPhone consider me an expert on this :p

Appreciate it. Guess I'm SOL (didn't bring my computer with me).

I sent a problem report to Apple about the movie rental - hopefully they'll refund the rental that expires today since I don't really want to watch it on my phone...
