iPhone Video Recorder 3G v3.0 was released yesterday, and it works with 2.1. Just in time for the 2.2 iPhone Software Update to be released and break it again.

Anyway, it supports compression and the framerate looks better than Cycorder. Plus it supports uploading directly to YouTube.

I downloaded the trial. It doesn't have a standby mode like Cycorder does. It is only recording or the menu screen. Can the full version be used as a viewfinder without recording and then press record when you are ready? Thanks

Is it really that much better than cycorder? I find that my videos are hit-or-miss with cycorder. Either the framerate is blah/OK or complete crap. I want some consistently decent framerates.

I have to try it a few more times to make a decision. I like that Cycorder has a standby by viewfinder. If the full version of Videorecorder doesn't I won't buy it.
It is worth checking out the trial though.

It doesn't, and you're right, it is more awkward to use than Cycorder that way.

Cycorder also seems to produce clearer audio than Videorecorder as well. This may be why Videorecorder produces smaller raw MOV files than Cycorder does.

One advantage that Videorecorder does have is its built-in compressor option. With it, you can produce an MP4 file that is a fraction (one third or less) the size of the raw MOV file. Smaller files mean more capacity, which may be worth it for some people.

I bought Videorecorder as a gamble. Right now, the most unimpressive aspect of it is their update schedule. I took them way too long to make a version that works with 2.1 firmware. I wonder what will happen when I update to 2.2?

Thanks for the reply. I also noticed that it will pause very briefly after like maybe 15 seconds of recording. It isn't bad but I did notice it. I think I will stick with Cycorder. I wish they offered a paid version to eliminate the ads.

The full version of iPhone Video Recorder 3G does not offer a stand-by (viewfinder) mode. Same as the trial. Another user commented on Video Recorder's audio quality being sub-par, and I have to concur (Sample-rate is 8 kHz vs Cycorder's 44.1 kHz). Video Recorder's 8 kHz sample-rate is regardless of the encoding bitrate.

Video Recorder seems to me to have slightly better video quality, although I haven't done a blind test so I'm not sure. Video Recorder does have compression options and YouTube upload capabilities. Cycorder records to the Motion JPEG format (practically uncompressed), so the videos must be transferred to a computer and compressed to do anything useful with them.

The email function doesn't seem to work, but I get around this by using MobileFinder to email the videos.

Buy a video camera? Or buy a regular digital camera since they all capture video as well?

    Obviously the answer is no.

Why don't you want to hack your iPhone? I find it to be pretty useless without some of the hacked features.

Weighing out the pros and cons puts Cycorder miles ahead of IVR.

    Cycorder
    pros & cons
    -High quality Audio
    -Medium quality Framerate
    -Viewfinder
    -Free
    -Larger file size

    iPhone Video Recorder
    pros & cons
    -Low quality audio
    -Higher framerate
    -Smaller File size
    -Upload to Youtube
    -Paid

The difference in framerate should be the deciding factor here since this IS a video recording app, but as it turns out the difference between the two is negligible, and the difference in audio is most notable. Throw in the Viewfinder and the fact that Cycorder is FREE, and you have a winner. Uploading to Youtube, while "cutting edge" is much farther down the feature list from the basic components that need to work first. (Framerate/Audio/Viewfinder)

I don't suppose anyone's tried installing this on 2.2 have they? It would be interesting to see if it still works.

In case anyone's interested, I just updated to 2.2 and can confirm that Video Recorder still works.

I'm having an issue. When sent via email using MOV (on the fly) mode..... I can't open it in Quicktime on my iMac. Says "the movie contains invalid data".

Husband's PC's Quicktime also reports the same error message.

Can anyone shed light on this?

I have the same problem. I get around this by using MobileFinder (from Cydia) to email videos.

Here's a tutorial worth looking at:
