So I got a 256 gig XS Max that’s been in the water dozens of time from watching an irresistible show in the shower (don’t judge lol) to being subjected to numerous beach conditions all while being drop dozens of times since ownership in a Unicorn beetle sleeve. The phone is almost mint with the only cosmetic flaws are just 2 scratches on the screen that you can’t tell it’s there with the screen on

So I’m on vacation in Jamaica I'm at the bar in the middle of the pool that’s only waste deep. Phone didn’t get all that wet because it was in my hand. My girl wanted me to take some pictures and I took like 12 of them and giver her my phone to pic and choose which ones were going on social media a couple minutes later she said something was wrong

My phone was boot looping for a few minutes and then all of a sudden I have a green screen. I thought the phone was toast because it’s condensation in the FaceTime camera but not the true depth camera

Further inspections.... my phone still works! I can receive calls, it vibrates, sound is there. I just have a blank whitish green screen

I have AppleCare+ so I’m not concerned about it being replaced... I’m just stuck without a phone for 6 days. I cheeped out on the airfare so I have a 5 hour layover in Chicago before heading back to Philadelphia so I think I’m gonna go to the apple store

You guys think it’s a screen issue or actual water damage?

Definitely sounds like water damage.

Since the OP has AC+, they could do express replacement and have a replacement phone when they return from their vacation. But if they have 5 hours to kill in Chicago, it may not hurt (though I'm unsure where the closest Apple Store is near O'Hare or Midway).

Agree with previous posts above re: water damage.

If you're flying into O'Hare there is an Apple Store at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg (15-20 min drive), Oak Brook Center (30 min drive).

If you're flying into Midway there is an Apple Store at Orland Square mall (45 min drive if heavy traffic), and the flagship store on Michigan Avenue / downtown Chicago on the Riverwalk (could take 30 mins, could take 1 hour depending on traffic), which is really nice this time of year. Highly recommend going here since there are tons of other ways to kill time here with a 5 hour layover. Risk of going into downtown is traffic getting back to airport in time.

Good luck!

OLED screens fail with even the slightest amount of water.

You are lucky you got by with it before it failed.

I mean it’s not like I went scuba diving... I’d barely touched the surface of the IP67 rating

I’m flying into Midway so I plan to go to the nearest apple store and hall ass back to the airport

I’m just highly disappointed though.... I put 100% trust into the IP67 rating and never thought this would happened

I could have understand if I had a cracked screen or major physical damage but my phone is mint except for a could hairline scratches on the screen

Does this mean I can’t get in the pool... much less the shower with my series 4 Apple Watch?

Disappointed

It means if you do not have AC+ and you have water damage, you are screwed.

It’s probably worth understanding the IP ratings, IPx7 is water resistant to immersion up to 1m for 30min, that’s the device placed in still water and with no external force behind the water. Using the phone in the shower wouldn’t be covered by IPx7, the device would need to also be IPx3 for protection against spraying water.

The IP ratings aren’t cumulative, IPx1-IPx6 cover directed liquid, IPx7-IPx8 are immersion only.

I have the same phone XS MAX. And the same thing happened to the screen few minutes after I wash it at sink. I thought it must be water damage. But the Apple technician was able to confirm there is no water damage to the phone and replace the screen for free. Interested to hear the outcome of yours.

Interesting... I’ll definitely report back

I didn’t check water damage when I made the appointment for the Genius Bar... I chose screen quality or whatever it said
