iPhone weather widgets conncected to internet?

The phone only needs to be on and talking to a cell tower. So no, no internet required.
Sometimes it gets cleared out though, and when I don't have service it says something along the lines of it can't update. Happened a lot not too long after I got it back in July when I was camping on some mountain in Pennsylvania. Also in north central Ohio. Since then I've yet to lose the internets in Missouri.

But doesn't the data come from Yahoo?
why does that matter? it can update via EDGE or WiFi (via the internet), and just like the dashboard widget, it remembers the last data, so it doesn't need a permanent connection.
It matters because the data comes from the internet not just from the magical cell tower
