This Worked For Me
3 weeks ago, my girlfriend got mad at me and threw my 3GS into the toilet. I reported her to the police and she was arrested.
I was really unhappy with her actions because I had to save an entire year in order to buy the phone in the first place.
I had read about water damage to the phone in this forum and knew that most people had permanent damage to their phone from water immersion. So I knew what to do and what not to do. I didn't try to turn it off or mess with it in any way.
It occured to me that after a plane crashes into the water, the NTSB always place the black box recorders in an ice cooler with water in order to preserve their condition while being transported back to their headquarters in D.C.
So I figured that if it is good enough for them then it's good enough for me.
So I removed the iphone from the toilet and placed enough of the toilet water into a bowl (with sealable lid). I then submerged the phone in the water in the bowl and sealed the lid.
I immediately drove to the Apple Store (after making a Genius appointment of course). I met the Genius and placed the bowl on the counter and said "I don't know what is wrong with my phone, it just stopped working."
He opened the bowl, looked inside, removed the phone, and examined it very carefully. He checked the water sensors too. He had a very puzzled expression on his face and called over a supervisor. They discussed it for a few minutes.
The Genius came back and said "Sir, I am sorry." I knew right then I was screwed, I tried to think of some fraud I could pull over on them. The Genius continued "obviously we have sold you a defective phone. It is still under warranty and we will, of course, replace it free of charge, and we will upgrade it to a 32mb for your trouble."
I was astonished, I had heard so many bad things about Apple, and yet here they were being humane.
I was so happy as I prepared to leave the store with my brand new shiny Iphone 3GS with 32mb memory. But I was curious, so I asked the Genius what was defective in the phone. He said "your water sensors didn't change colors".
I highly recommend this approach if you drop your Iphone in the water.
As far as my ex-girlfriend, well she had 20 hours of community service and is now dating some guy who has one of those Google phones. I wish them luck.
