Is possible to share your edge or 3G internet connection by the wifi hardware of the iPhone?

i was at a hotel this weekend and they had a free hotspot for iphone (o2) users. Trouble is i wanted to use my laptop instead. When i connected it took me to the page i entered my o2 phone number and it would not let me connect.

Is there a way to share the iphone's wifi connection, instead of the 3g connection?

3.0 allows tethering so you can easily use your 3G or Edge connection on your laptop via bluetooth or USB.
