Hello,

Looking for information on people that might have been on the same or similar situation.

Some background:

I have the iPhone SE. Love the little thing to bits but I wished for better battery and camera. So yesterday, I bought through Amazon the iPhone 11 with AppleCare+

Turns out, what I really wanted is just a small iPhone. Also, turns out that I hate the guts to have to swipe up every time I've got to unlock the damn thing with Face ID. With touch ID, you smash the button with the thumb and it just unlocks.

On Amazon, there's the option to ask for a refund for the phone itself, but not for AppleCare+

Does anyone know if that gets refunded too at the same time as the phone?

I purchased both things together at the same time through Amazon. In theory, I guess Amazon ought to handle that? In any case thanks for the heads up. I'll reach Amazon Support and see what they say. Got the phone in my hands less than 24h in total so, I hope they'll play nice.

Reached Apple Support through Twitter. I was referred back to the seller: Amazon
Waiting to see what Amazon Support says.

Call Apple. Share the agreement number with them. Only they can cancel. If the agreement number hadn’t been generated, only Amazon could cancel.

I’m not sure if it would be the same for a phone but I had ordered a Series 4 Watch with AC and decided I wanted the Series 5 instead. I returned the watch unopened in the same box that it was shipped in but had to do the return for both the watch and AC through Amazon.

Got news.
Amazon.fr declined AppleCare+ refund based on: "it's a digital item" so we can't refund that.
I returned the phone by post this morning.

As suggested here, I reached to Apple Support. My call was escalated several times until I reached someone from Apple "Agreement Administration", in Ireland. I explained the situation, the manager checked the Serial Number and the AppleCare+ license, which had no POC or any number. Seems it's a new special license or system they got working with Amazon or something like that.
He was puzzled as to why Amazon denied the refund. AppleCare+ refunds can be issued within the first 30 days of purchase and prorated ( ? ) after that. I had the phone in my hands less than 24h, so, full refund for me on that.
The problem though, the refund had to be issued by Amazon, for he was unable to do that because of the new system in place with Amazon.

In any case, my issue with amazon was noted down, got a case file and an email from Apple to reach them out again if Amazon would keep giving me trouble.

I reached out again Amazon.fr support with the additional details I was given by Apple Support and the refund was quickly issued but as an "exception". Super dicey.

Long Story short, buy your new Apple devices directly from Apple.

On a side note, all the Apple Support staff involved was remarkably helpful.

Glad to hear it worked out!

You can also just buy your device from Amazon and buy the AC+ afterwards (within a time frame) directly from Apple.

Thanks. Very happy to have this solved and kudos to Apple Support.

Maybe Apple devices "can" still be safely purchased from Amazon but AppleCare absolutely not. Rather underwhelming how amazon staff handled this all. They are either not trained on how AppleCare works, or don't have the tools to properly handle these cases or both. You'd expect an automatic refund of the AppleCare purchase if you bought it at the same time with a new device, or have the option to ask for an automatic refund within 30 days of the device purchase.

In any case, too much hassle and bothersome to buy Apple devices with Amazon.

On a side note, got the feeling that the next buyer getting that phone will get it with AppleCare+, for free lol

This is definitely the best move other than just getting everything from Apple.
