Samsung already has under screen camera technology to where the camera disappears when not in use and then reappears when ready to use and the picture quality is very good. Apple is just waiting till that technology matures and then will implement when it’s ready for showtime.
Yes Samsung has a really low res garbage screen over the camera hole. Congratulations.
You can differentiate it from the rest of the screen. That’s garbage still.

An iPhone with under screen FaceID might happen along with the foldable iPhone or for the 20th anniversary model. Might take a long time for under screen front facing camera.

This is not a new technology, but it has a lot of compromises. Many brands, like Samsung, ZTE, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, have all released phones with under-display front camera at some point. However, they all scaled back or abandoned this technology, due to issues such as camera quality or display uniformity. It'd be great if Apple has now single-handedly advanced the technology to the point where it is perfect or near-perfect, but it feels unlikely.

I haven’t seen a single phone with under screen camera that the screen where the hole is, didn’t look like crap. It’s a compromise no matter what. Unless you get rid of the narcissist camera.
Huh, I recently had a Nubia with underscreen camera and it was utterly brilliant, could barely see it. Selfies weren’t the best but I very rarely use them and didn’t care, and each gen rapidly improves. The unblemished screen was absolutely stunning for media and reading. Also had a xiaomi mi9t with a pop up camera which was fantastic. I utterly hate even pinhole cameras let alone this giant island. The tech is there but these cheap companies just want something to dangle for the future.

It's about marketing. From the beginning iPhones have always had a defining design feature on the front to differentiate the device from devices from the competition. Home button, Touch ID, the notch, flat sides, antenna lines, Dynamic Island, etc. Those design features made for quick, easy recognition of an iPhone when seen in public, in film, television, adverts, print, and other forms of media.

Until Apple designers and engineers create a new, easily identifiable "look" I don't imagine the large interruptions to the displays will go away. The me-too-Android look is not an Apple thing.

It isn’t/wasn’t an unblemished screen. You can see where the camera is. And the photos suck. That’s trash. The pop up camera is the only good solution. Other than getting rid of it entirely. I do t like the island either but let’s not pretend like that over camera display is any good.
