Iphone wont turn off or exit contacts

Hi, my Iphone seems to be stuck. I cannot turn it off or exit phone mode. The screen still responds and i can still flip through contacts. The phone will not charge. All the buttons seem to work(I can still use the sleep/wake button but it wont turn the phone off) but i cant access any other part of the phone. The phone is, i guess, relatively frozen.

Ok, now its fully frozen because someone called me. Its now stuck on the persons name and the slide button doesn't work now. Please help me before i throw my phone into a wall.

Have you tried holding the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time til it resets?

Like posted above, hold down your home button and power button at the same time until you see the Apple start up logo.
