I can not access all previous notifications by swiping from the left side, top even when the device is unlocked with FaceID. I have to get into the home screen, and then I get access.

On my 6S, I can swipe even when the phone is locked. Looking for a setting to allow for something similar, not finding it. Am I missing something?

I was under the impression that Notification Center can be access from the lock screen, especially once FaceID has authenticated.

Just to be clear for all y'all dummies like me who didn't get it after reading this...StoneCold X said swipe up form the bottom of the lock screen...That does NOT work. It gets you either to "home" with all of your icons if face id unlocked or nowhere if phone didn't unlock. Get to notifications by swiping up with your finger, starting from about 1 cm above the bottom of the screen where the flashlight and camera icons are located. If you swipe below them you go to "home." Now if you swipe up between or above those icons, THEN the magic occurs. Actually, a swipe UP anywhere between the lower flashlight-camera icon and the time at the top of the lock screen gets you to the notifications.
