This is exactly what I am talking about. I don't even understand this myself. I have no issue with notifications on either system and don't even understand what you mean . Both phones notify me of something coming in. Do I know when I get a text, call, email, or app notification? Yes. That is really all I need. Trying to figure out what else someone might want.

This is exactly what I am talking about. I don't even understand this myself. I have no issue with notifications on either system and don't even understand what you mean . Both phones notify me of something coming in. Do I know when I get a text, call, email, or app notification? Yes. That is really all I need. Trying to figure out what else someone might want.
- Visual Voicemail = Open the Phone app, swipe across to the 4th panel on the right side, there's VVM. I love stock Android's swiping in the Phone app, so smooth and fast to get around the dialer, to contacts, and voice mail. One of the biggest turnoffs is the iOS Phone app to me. When I had the 7 Plus I use the phone a lot for business, and I would get so frustrated with how iOS Phone works, not as fast and more clicks needed to get around it, felt like something stuck from 2008.
I'm literally looking at my S7 Edge and I have no clue what you mean. Don't know what you mean by 4th panel on right side.
I think I figured it out. I can open phone app which lists people I have called. I can then select the 10 dots on the bottom right to go to dialer. Then at bottom left is the button to take me to Visual Voicemail.. Much easier on iphone. Always bottom right button no matter if in dialer, contact menu mode, or any other mode.

Open the Phone app, there's 4 tabs per say. First tab or panel is on the left with the Favorites or starred contacts. Second tab / panel is that days calls or missed calls, etc... Third panel is the Contacts list. And the fourth panel, all the way on the right side is the Visual Voicemail. All of these 4 tabs / panels can be easily swiped to back and forth very quickly, and there's a big search bar across the top always there, to easily look up a contact or phone number.
I just find stock Android Phone app to be faster, and easier, and less clicks to do something than the iOS Phone app.
I'll be honest with you. I read it and it is a non issue with someone like me or my family members. For power users I get it. I literally have no issue with either phone's notification system. Can I see when something comes in? Yes. I'm just giving you the view of an average consumer who knows less than probably anyone in this thread.
Also when I hit phone there are only 2 tabs. Recents is 1st tab, Contacts is second tab. There is then a 10 dot array button at bottom which take me to dialer. That is where I can access the VVM button.

I guess it's just "Different strokes, for different folks". Some are totally content with the Honda Accord of smartphones = iPhone X. Others want something different like the ///M5 of smartphones.
Apple is doing very well for themselves selling the stock generic iPhone to the masses, and they are making major $$$ off it, so they don't need to do any tweaks or revisions to the UI. It sells like hotcakes as is .
The iPhone I'd like to see will never happen, which would be an iPhone X Plus ( 6.4" screen in a body overall no larger than the iPhone 8 Plus ) with the top ten JB tweaks as part of the base stock iOS, and a revamped Notification system. That would be my dream smartphone. But that's not gonna happen

I think they wanted to limit the changes to a few nibbles here and there. Dropping the home button, and new gestures they added to this device are some of the biggest UI changes in iOS since it's conception. I can only imagine / hope the software gets updated to take advantage of all of that space and the power of these devices going forward. Sadly, we likely won't see big changes on the X until WWDC 2018 🙁 .
The fact is, they always make changes to the UI. But it's more like piled on add-ons on top of the same old iOS.
And yes I say add-ons, Some aspects of iOS have the same different feeling that MS Windows has with it's separate but intertwined(and scattered) metro UI. The metro UI is layered on certain parts of the settings, and other aspects in Windows along with the desktop UI. I have that same feeling with iOS more and more on every update. For example: the control center on iOS surely doesn't feel like it's a part of iOS, but more like something they just slapped on.
iOS is starting to have that inconsistent look and/or feel to it, that made it great in the first place. And was one of the major reasons iOS users didn't want to move to Android years ago.
IMO, it's just better to revamp the entire UI design before iOS becomes a cluster@#@# like Android once was.

My point is more that you don’t need to use iTunes. The last time I had to use it was a borked beta download. And using iTunes then was easier than fixing a borked Android install.

I didnt read the article but agree that iOS has had the same look and function for quite a bit. Which is what pushed me to try Android for the first time in a while. I was looking for something different to try and the iPhone 8 or X didnt really do it for me. I feel like iOS is in the same position as it was from iOS 6 -7. Everyone wants a new look. Maybe next year iOS 12 will give us a revamp again.

Yup, same here. Still don’t see why anyone needs to use iTunes. I move content around to all my various devices without ever touching iTunes.

Moral of the story is, if you're an iPhone user, modern android on the major flagships is as good if not better than the current iteration of iOS. It's not just the "OS you can customize" anymore.

Fully agree with all of this.
In fact they have made the whole UI less simple. I actually use my iPad less on iOS 11 as it has become less intuitive use, it just feels like I have to do more work to do the same things I did in less steps before.
Usually after a new iOS update I'd put my Android aside when I could and use my iPad heavily and thoroughly enjoy the experience even though I'd go back to my Android due to functionality. But now I am not as enthusiastic as I am finding iOS 11 rather odd and leaning towards convoluted and n some areas.
Since one of the main features android has over iOS is customization wouldn’t the Honda comparison be more for android? Honda owners loooooove to mod their rides.
People who buy luxury cars don’t buy with the mind set of all mods they can do to it similar to people who understand how iOS works when they buy an Apple device.

Here is my own opinion. Subjective. Just some random thoughts...
iOS has became boring. Pretty boring. And somewhat non intuitive. Here are the reasons for my opinion:
1) List of icons in a grid. Pretty damn boring. And unintuitive. I mean, if I have just 4 icons on iPhone 7+, why can't I put them on the bottom of the display? Easier to reach, and looks better since there is already dock with app icons there.
And ditch this grid of icons already. As someone said here, I also use a plain black wallpaper, since it makes no sense to use wallpaper at all. It's hidden behind numerous icons.
2) Phone app is simply outdated. It was outdated when first iPhone came out, but now it's simply a joke. Why can't Apple implement smart dial like even prehistoric phones had? Much easier to call someone. On iOS I have to scroll and scroll... Or use full keyboard to search. Again, unintuitive.
3) I don't need much of customizations. All I want is simple ways to set some ringtones, and simple stuff like that. I don't need widgets on homescreen (but would love them), but I simply hate when all I can see is app icon after app icon.
Setting sounds for alarm, phone calls, media, etc. -> pretty unintuitive as well when compared to Android.
I could go on and on, but these are some really basic stuff. I'm not asking for a full revamp of iOS. Quite the opposite. Just some small tweaks.
Someone here said 'basic' users love iOS. My father is 76 years old. He was using iPhone for 5 years. I bought him a Sony phone last Christmas. He loves it. And I mean loves it. For him, way better then iPhone. Easier to use. And he can't even use a PC/Mac. I have tried for long to get him to learn to surf the internet on a PC, but I have failed.
If you can use iOS, you can use Android. Even if you are 90yr. old nanny. Period 🙂

I love Apple ecosystem. I use android and iOS. But if I were to ditch mac for example, I wouldn't even consider buying an iPhone anymore. Only reason I buy iPhone in the first place is because of my MBP/iMac and ecosystem. Apple really needs to start working on their software. But I'm afraid that things will remain the same until sales drop. So iOS will be the same for a long time 🙁

I guess you failed at reading comprehension. I like itunes. I use it all the time. I use it to manage media that I access from multiple Apple TVs. I use it to move that same media from my mac to my ipad to access while offline on my ipad. I use it to transfer music to my ipad and iphone. I use it to create playlists. etc.
Not one place did I write that it is the only software you can use. It does exactly what I need. Take the rocks out of your skull and read next time.

But hey you all keep scratching your head as to why Apple keeps selling phones like hotcakes with little to no change and wondering why there is little change. I told you why, but keep burying that head in the sand. So you can say basic users don't love IOS, but you would be wrong as proven by ios sales numbers.

The car analogies fall apart fast. Apple is more like BMW, whereas Android spans all levels of models.
iOS at times can be counterintuitive. I notice it mostly when I need to tweak camera settings. If I want to switch from 1080p to 4K video I have to exit the camera app and go into settings, scroll down and find the camera settings (and since this is the setting I mess with a lot, why can’t I put it toward the top of the list of settings?) and then go in and change. It takes time away from the action going on around me. In the Android phones I’m familiar with, I can make such a setting change within the camera app.
Then we are at the mercy of some developer deciding certain display settings should be stuck under “accessibility” instead of under the display settings, even though it is the display that is being altered.
I understand Apple wants to tout how friendly they are to people with disabilities, but I think it would make more sense to have an accessibility feature be a subcategory under the setting category that describes the settings it actually changes, such as font, sound, display and so forth.
People who don’t have special needs might not otherwise be aware certain display and sound settings that they might want to change anyway, can be changed, because it would not naturally occur to them to look under General Settings, then look for the Accessibility sub category and then scroll through and see that certain elements of display and sound can be changed. They’re going to naturally and logically start off looking under Display or Sound or any other category that describes the characteristics they want to change.
I see there are certain settings that truly do meet special needs and don’t fall easily under any other category so I’m not saying I want Accessibility abolished. I just want to see it more logically utilized.
One nice thing I can think of to say about iOS 11 on the iPhone X: I envy how easy it is for my husband to get to the flashlight on his new iPhone. 🙂
