Hoping this little tidbit of info saves someone else some time and frustration.
tldr: The Apple branded leather portfolio case will not work (turn on/off) when opening and closing IF you have a small metal plate on the back of the phone - the kind used for magnet mounts.
I mounted a circular metal plate on the back of my X, above the wireless charging coils so I can use the phone (without case or thin case) in the car. The plate worked great for mounting and would still charge wirelessly; however, the portfolio case will NOT work.
The Genius bar almost swapped my phone for a new one until I tried removing the plate and voila! It worked again.
So anyways, I'll be mounting the metal plate directly to the thin cases for when I need to use it in the car, and not anywhere near the portfolio case.
