Someone posted that the coating used on the bezel of the space gray is what's called PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), a smilier process used by Panerai, an expensive watch brand. The PVD is heated.

PVD that Panerai use is the same stuff they use on guns. Very different and a hell of a lot more expensive process. Guess what they chip off too. Or prolonged use hitting the desk at work wears it down too.

Also at least with the stainless you can pull out some metal Polish and 5 jobs later it will be like new. Don't even need to mask it off and you can rinse it under a tape after to get the excess off.
 
Probably from the shiny and reflective sides of the phone. Reminds me of the iPod Touches prior to the 5th gen.

i heard metal polish besides remove the scratches, also leaves some “micro marring/swirl”
