I’ve had a lot of cases of the years, some that cost upwards of $150 with their fancy metal exo skeleton. The best, by far, in terms of phone protection is the plain ol apple rubber case. Unlike the author, I drop my phone about once a week. When using the Apple rubber case I have not had one cracked screen or bent phone. I had my phone fly out of my back pocket after jumping up (team scored a touchdown) go over my loft second floor railing and land on the hard concrete below. Dust off, keep using. I don’t know if it’s the rubber or apple knowing their phone better then anyone else. I may stray and get another case because it looks cool, but I know for a fact it won’t protect as well.

There was another guy on Macrumors who said basically the exact opposite about his Apple case. His phone ended up shattering inside one of the Apple cases. Drops are just so complicated and depend on so many things. Sounds like you probably just got lucky with your drops. The Apple cases don't even cover the bottom of the phone, I would consider that a major issue if I was really concerned about protection.

I never see these articles mention what I see as the most important attribute of an iPhone X case, whether there's a bottom lip or not.

The Apple cases, for years, have had no lip at the bottom of the screen. This allows for accessories to connect more easily, but in the case of the iPhone X, allows the home gesture to feel more natural.

A bottom lip on the iPhone X gets in the way of starting your gesture from the edge of the phone, making it less natural, and can make the default reachability gesture quite difficult.

Totally appreciate these reviews. Can we also show the front of the phone? Every one shows a case from the back. Seeing the front is also important for some buyers. Thank you again for these.

Sure, I'll make sure to include front-facing photos going forward. If there's a specific case you're interested from this batch where I didn't do a front-facing photo, let me know and I'll take a picture for you.

With the exception of the Essential Skin, the Veil XT, and the Essential Snap, all of these cases have a bit of a bottom lip because they all offer wraparound protection.

I didn't mention it on a lot of these because most of these a small enough lip that I didn't notice it. With Lucid Clear, Sheath, and the Casetify cases, it doesn't much get in the way of swiping. It's a little more noticeable with some others, but not enough that I felt like it really impacted the way I use the phone. Appreciate the feedback, though, it's something I'll make sure to mention going forward when it's a factor.

I agree with previous poster. Why do you never show the front? That’s how I’m able to determine how thick a case is and what it looks like around the lip. The sides and back don’t do anything for me.
Still waiting on the Power Support Air Jacket case to come out.

could you comment on whether the Caudabe Lucid Clear has a decent lip on yours? You mention it in the review but mine and others on the forums has barely any lip, and doesn't keep the screen from touching a surface it is lying on (and certainly no front protection from any kind of drop)

I'm so torn! In the last 2 years I've gotten used to "going naked" with my iPhone 6, but I don't know if I can do that with the X. I will immediately do an insurance that covers all accidental damages + theft, but still...

I'm thinking about a sleeve, as a sort of middle option: protection from scratches and from fall when I take it out from the pocket + naked look when I'm using it. Of course a sleeve add a new "high risk action" that is the moment when you take it out of the sleeve and make much harder to just take the phone out of the pocket to just give a quick look, but I have an Apple Watch, so I can see most of the things there...

Has someone some good suggestion?

I'm going to start a new business selling jeans with microfibre lined pockets :)

Seriously though, I'd prefer to have a phone naked in my pocket than in a sleeve - I can just imagine it flying out of the sleeve straight through my fingers onto the floor.

I love the Caudabe Lucid Clear case. I've gone naked with the 7 and 6s, and I do not want to hide the X in a case, so this is the perfect option, as I'm a bit scared to use the X naked (aside from the fact it's a fingerprint magnet really). How well it will resist impact? I don't know, I'm not going to test it. But it looks like it will offer at least some protection, and I guess most of it depends on the actual fall. Anyway, recommend it to all that want to see the beauty of the phone with (at least some) protection.

I still can’t understand why people cover up such beautiful phones with ugly cases. Just don’t drop them. It isn’t that hard.

There is some irony in spending so much money on a phone, partially for its visual/stylistic features, only to have to cover it up in a suit of armor; however, all it takes is one unforeseen accident to wreck your expensive gizmo. It's hard to drop a phone until it finally happens to you. Two recent articles you might check out:

I've always used the RhinoShield Dropguard bumper cases. They have saved my iPhones countless times. Is there a plan to review one for the X?

Only a couple comments on the apple cases... I had my 6plus in the Apple leather case and it has provided ample protection. Not a lot of drops and I use the "kick save" for an additional layer of protection. I also think it looks nice in the leather material. Minimalist but elegant. Before the 6plus, on the 5, 4, and 3GS, I hadn't used a case so I wanted something minimal on the 6plus. My good experience with the Apple case on that phone has led me to make the same decision for the X.

Leather Apple case is tops in my opinion.

I think it does keep the iPhone from touching a surface when face down, but it's definitely a minimal lip.

Yeah, I just got my Caudabe Lucid Clear and love it too. It feels like it should do well enough on drops, the material feels pretty tough. I'll probably switch to a different case if I'm going hiking or doing intense sports. But this case is definitely my daily driver. The iPhone X is too nice to cover up and like you I'm not going naked with this phone.

There doesn't seem to be much photos of the front lip atleast HD ones. Btw is there an ETA on the revised Lucid clear case with a higher lip?

Good info but I can’t help notice how large the phone looks in that persons hand.

I've got the Caudabe Lucid Clear and Sheath. Both are great cases, as has been discussed elsewhere on Macrumors. I'm sticking with the Lucid Clear for now because it's the first time I've used a clear case in a while. Enjoying it quite a bit, but imagine I'll head back to the tried and true Sheath after a while, as that's what I've used on my past iPhones. It's really a nice compromise between protection and thinness.

@thelookingglass, is the Lucid Clear tight fitting? Meaning do you see it scratching your iPhone X at all?

Fits really tight. Love the fit. No scratches as far as I can tell. But scratching in the stainless steel band is unavoidable over time because that’s just how stainless steel is. It’s also not an issue because scratches buff out of stainless steel.
