iPhone X iPhone X compass and direction indicator in maps

Is there a known issue with the direction indicator in map apps? If I walk forward it won’t point in the direction I’m walking but will always point to the side a bit.

How? Moving it in the figure of 8 motion made no difference.

Isn't there a true north & magnetic north setting somewhere? This may be why. Although I'm not sure it impacts the Apple Maps arrow..
