So the phone booted up fine, connected it with my iPhone 7+ to restore from it, and then it asked me to update to iOS11.1
It failed halfway, and I got the connect to iTunes message.

Tried it once and got an error again. Trying again now.

Can you erase it, then set it up as new, update it and then restore from your old phone?

its keeps giving me an error 7. I can't erase or anything.
it wants to be restored but it fails halfway
I hope I don't have to take it back tomorrow, damn.

I don't even see an error 7 in the list:

still error, tried also on 2 other Macs, one was running Sierra

By now, I am pretty sure the update bricked the device

    just an update
so the online support had no idea how to help since "error 7" is not listed anywhere by apple. They suggested to follow up with the engineers.
I am going to return it and order a new - it sucks I have to wait one month now.

its strange that nobody else had a similar problem.

What version of iTunes are you running? It may not be compatible with the X. That’s all I can think of at this point.

Well I am using the latest "12.7.1.14" - I even redownloaded it from the website and reinstalled it.
It seems that error 7 is something that people would get when installing iTunes on Windows - the only thing that I found online that is related to error 7 - but it is not the case here.

Strange. And yes, that's what I found to be the case as well. The verbiage is interesting though as your prompt doesn't say Error 7, but Unknown Error (7). I would give a DFU restore a try at this point. Lemme know if you have any luck. https://ios.gadgethacks.com/how-to/put-iphone-x-iphone-8-iphone-8-plus-into-dfu-mode-itunes-0180057/

    same error...
it always crashes when the iTunes displays "restoring iphone firmware" - always at the same point and the phone just freezes for while

I'm sorry, I'm out of ideas. If you have access to an Apple Store, that would be my next step. Best of luck.

    Thanks :)

Well I will wait a couple of days in case more people have the same issue and an update shows, otherwise I will just return it.

hm, well I tried on windows and I got instead an error (-1), which is linked with hardware issues.

another update (just for future reference)
After-sales support told me that they have spare devices for cases like mine, so I should get a replacement sooner than ordering a new one.
[ of course I have already ordered a new one just to be safe side, haha]
