I had about 30% battery left and was watching a youtube video. The screen went off and I thought it just went to sleep (which I thought was strange because I was watching a full screen video). I pressed the power button and was greeted with the Apple logo, and then it turned off again. I tried a few times, I would just get the Apple logo, then it would turn off.

I plugged it into the charger and it powered on and finally booted. I even heard the ding to signify it was charging. However, my battery meter was not showing it was charging and furthermore it was at 1% which is impossible since it was at 30% a few minutes ago when I had checked.

So now as long as it sits on the charger it will stay on, but if I start to play with the device even while plugged in, it shuts down. If I take it off the charger, it shuts down. I tried a hard reset, restoring through iTunes and nothing. It's been sitting on the charger for a couple of hours and still only showing 1%.

Apple wants me to take it in for repair but I refuse to have a repair done on a not even 2 week old device. I told the advisor on the phone that I would either want a replacement or a refund.

He advised me to take it into an Apple store, which I am doing tomorrow.

Do Apple stores usually have stock for replacing devices this early on when it's not even in stock for sale? Also what are the chances they will want to repair it over replacing it? I plan on going to the flagship store on 5th Ave in NYC.

Apple have back stock on reserve for replacements. They’re usually devices pulled off the production line pre-packaging.

Good to know! This is my first iPhone so I wasn't sure how it works. Do you think they will just replace it or want to send it for repair?

Relax. You would have more of a chance of getting a repair and/or REFURB unit as a replacement if we were deeper in the cycle. That line is only from a script the Apple support person is using.

Getting a defect early in the first 2-3 weeks of a release is a good thing IMO, you will most likely get a brand new one in retail packaging since it is so early and probably be out of there the quickest.

Make sure you back it up before returning to the store.

Did you get yourself an apple care plus?

Yeah, I'm kinda not worried about it. I was worried that they wouldn't have one to replace it with but it seems like they will based on the other reply in the thread and was also worried that they might want to repair it over replacing it

Already backed up yesterday 🙂 Phone won't stay powered on long enough now for it to back up even plugged in :-/

Not yet, I planned on getting it though within the first 60 days. Shouldn't matter in this case since the device has a year warranty and it wasn't an accidental incident. It's clearly an issue with the device.

If you want it replaced with a new phone, you have to take everything in, the box, goodies etc. You are effectively returning a defective phone for a new phone. Otherwise it's an in warranty replacement. Mind you, the replacements are new too. Even two years from now the replacements will likely be new. Used phones typically go to third markets to be sold as refurbished/used.

I doubt they will have one in the retail packaging if they don't have any retail units in stock. It will probably be a warranty replacement that was pulled before packaging like @Jasonstevens said. I will bring the box and stuff as well just in case though

Hey. How hard is it to take ur phone to apple store than bitching about it on the internet?

How hard is it to not be an a$$hole on the internet?

As @Lobwedgephil said, I was looking for information on bringing it in to the store and what to expect since it is my first iPhone. And also to see if there was anyone else that experienced this issue

They will replace it. It is within the return period, so they don’t want people to return a defective product.
They’d actually replace it even if it’s fifteen days past because it would be a shame to put someone through waiting for an appt at the genius grove or bar; and to give a replacement device when they can just return it (much faster) and code it as defective and give the customer a new one.

As long as you’re aware that it’s limited warranty, if i’m not mistaken.

I agree with you. I’ve had Apple replace a phone well after 14 days, but within 14 days it’s more of a sure thing...

Yeah, but this is clearly a HW defect/failure and would be covered under that limited warranty, AppleCare+ just extends the warranty, gives you more phone support and gives you two accident incidents. Any HW failure/defect not caused by negligence or physical damage (which in this case was neither) would be covered under that limited warranty

Good point.

Yes. Don’t drop it in water and complain about the screen peeling and condensation under the camera lens...

lol yeah, definitely nothing happened to it. I've only had it since Thursday so it's only 2 days old. The funny thing was when I first unboxed it I put it on the charger right out of the box it wasn't charging then either. However, I read on the internet that sometimes the software just doesn't indicate it's charging even if it is and to do a hard reset, which I did and it then detected that it was charging. I chalked it up to the glitch I read about it, but then today when it just died like that with 30% battery and wouldn't stay powered on off the charger and would die when being used on the charger it made me realize that it probably was something more wrong the first time it did it.

Maybe you don't know but the included charger with the iPhone X is a slow charger. It is not fast enough to charge and for you to use at the same time.

You need to spend $85 on an Apple fast charger.

It's been sitting on the charger all day, and didn't budge from 1%. It only would stay powered on if I did not use it, once I started using it, it would shutdown after a few minutes. It's for sure not charging, then it completely went dead even while on the charger, and hasn't come back on since and it's been sitting on the charger. It's for sure an issue with the device. I'll update the thread tomorrow after I bring it in to the Apple Store.
