There’s not enough YouTube drop tests with different types of cases and screen protectors.

I’d love to see if the rugged cases are overdone; if the minimal ones are useless; what is an optimal design and material - minimum thickness expected etc. Just a good sample of types as manufacturers seem to have similar offerings.

Can a skin offer enough “cling” to give the “most durable glass” some extra resilience?

I’ve seen reverse drop tests of glass protectors when weights are dropped on to a static phone rather than dropping the phone itself. I’m assuming having would be useful, but based more on anecdotes and guessing, not actual testing.

I have a spiegen ... Ultra Hybrid case (bumper + clear back and a kickstand). I dropped about 3.5 feet on it's face onto (barely) carpeted concrete... no issues.

The case I don't like as much as I thought - the clear back lets in all kinds of dust, but it's a decently resilient case

Got my phone on 11/4 at the Apple store, got the Apple Tan leather case for it. I found that with slight arthritis in my hands that the Apple leather case was too slippery. Returned the leather case and got Tech21 instead. I would have dropped it for sure with the leather case!

What really irks me is the stupid Wayfair.com commercial where people drop their phone or tablet on purpose. Is this some kind of fad? Who in their right mind would drop any phone on purpose??

Am I the only one who doesn’t drop things?

Nope. I only ever dropped one of my iPhones and it was just one time. It was the original iPhone and I dropped it face first in a parking lot. Luckily the screen didn't get damaged at all. Haven't dropped one since then. I also make it a point not to pull my phone out if I'm standing on a hard surface that would damage it if dropped.

That phone is built like a tank. I still have mine used as paperweight that gets tossed around. Minimal damage.

Wife thought it was harder to keep clean, but I wanted carpet for our apartment when we moved in. Because gadgets.

The first official iPhone available in Australia was the iPhone 3G. And the wife dropped it once in the apartment - in the kitchen, where there was no carpet! Cracked the screen which I then replaced myself. That was the only iPhone screen I ever replaced and ever since!

It's like driving - you may be the most skilful and careful driver on the road, but sometimes it's out of your control.

In my case, young kids... Also, you'd have to vigilant to (almost) never lend your phone to anyone else!!

Hope you knocked on wood ;)

I've got an almost spotless track record when it comes to the smartphones, cell phones, PDA's, laptops, cameras, etc. that I have carried over the years. I never used a protective case for a PDA/phone/smartphone until the iPhone 5. I did not use one for either the 3G or the 4.

my iPhone 6 is the first one put a case on and a glass screen protector. As I said, my track record is very good, but accidents do happen. Especially to those of use who have small children and sometimes try to multitask while juggling. It only takes one moment of distraction or one stupid risk... and kids tend to make you distracted and sleep deprived. I've definitely dropped my iPhone 6 a few times over the last 3 years. I think only one of those times was an actual drop. I can think of a couple times when my iPhone got knocked off a table where it I had left it (which obviously wasn't a good place to leave it).

I guess it depends on how risk averse and how careful you are. If you've never had a drop or a knock that did any damage, it's not something you likely worry about. For everyone else it seems like AppleCare + would make the most sense... especially if you don't want a case to add bulk or detract from the looks, but it's expensive. A decent case and screen protector will certainly add some protection for very little money, but no guarantee. That said I read a lot more posts about broken smartphones that were dropped without a case than I read about ones that were dropped and had a case and a screen protector.

Personally I like having a case. These smartphones are too thin without them. I think the right case makes them more comfortable to hold.

I wouldn't say the X is thin - it's massive with a moderately sized case vs an iPhone 6/7 with a thin one. At least you know with the 6/7 you could get away with a thinner solution. The drop tests for the X on YouTube give me pause!

Mine bounced around a Lowes parking lot (front and back) and survived without a scratch. It was dressed in a clear silicone Sahara case and a Sahara tempered glass. Even the case and screen protector survived. Phew.

Yeah... that's the thing. Does the X require more case to keep all that glass safe? If so then you're right... things are possibly going to get uncomfortably thick. My iPhone 6 with a standard Speck case is 10mm thick. I wouldn't expect the X version of the case to be much more than another mm thicker. Maybe two if they are trying to buffer the glass back a bit more. That's still 10mm. The question is whether or not that's enough case. Speck says it will protect the X for up to 10 feet of drop, but of course they can't test for every surface and every angle of impact. That said I've never dropped an iPhone more than 3 feet or so. Even from that distance it only takes hitting the right thing at the right angle, and drops don't always happen on perfectly flat surfaces.

Edge to edge glass wasn't enough... they had to go and put glass on the back as well. It's almost like Apple designed the X to sell more AppleCare

Never had a smashed phone *touch wood* but dropped my naked X about 3 feet onto laminate flooring the other day, on the way down it bounced off a plastic luggage box- my heart skipped a beat! But luckily not a single mark. I love the feel of the phone and the stainless steel band but it looks like im going to have to face facts and apply a case because its very slippery, its slid off my bed and sofa a couple of times but i have carpeted floor :(

Also because of the recent drop scare I’m looking to sign up to John Lewis added care very soon.

Am I the only one who doesn’t drop things?

Since the original iPhone came out in June of 2007, the number of times I've dropped my iPhone is exactly zero. I, too, am baffled by the number of drops I hear about. I'm very conscious about it when it's in my hand, or I'm pulling it out of my pocket or putting it away.

Maybe it's because I never put a case on my phone? I don't know, but it seems to be not dropping it is far preferable to all these strategies people prepare for in the case they drop theirs.

I dropped my iPhone the other day on my tile floors at home. Thankfully I had a case and tempered screen protector on it. Screen protector also survived.

Well, most of us were born with normal fingers, without the suction cups you seem to have.

As an imperfect human, with some clumsy tendencies and having borne children, I put protection on my phone. I do not have the time, energy or stamina to hold it in a gorilla grip at every minute nor set it in its plush cradle when I’m not using it.

Dude totally not a big deal. I've called AppleCare to get a mail in screen replacement and they will tell you that if you buy AppleCare and then get the replacement you'll save money.
That’s what I love about Apple. When I was buying a Samsung and the Pixel 2 you have to decide while you are purchasing if you want the insurance. I prefer to buy the insurance after I’ve had the phone a few days to make sure I like it and won’t be returning it. I ended up returning the Pixel 2 so I’m glad I didn’t buy the insurance and have to deal with the bureaucracy of getting a refund on that.

The Samsung plan seemed a bit confusing and overly reliant on the quality of third party services, so I ended up not getting it at all. It might be good, but I never heard any word of it because it’s so new.

If I get an IPhone X I’m getting something like an Otterbox and then putting the phone in its Otterbox into a giant wool sock filled with packing peanuts. ;)

Seriously, I’d get AppleCare. I don’t always, but for something that expensive and all glass, heck yeah. Too many people have spoken positively of their AppleCare service over the years for me to be wary of it.

I don’t tend to drop things, but I’ve had stuff get knocked off of counters. Usually books, but I’m not taking chances.

Yes, and risks seem to increase with kids (which I don’t have) and cats (which I do).

Truly! Cats know they aren’t supposed to be up on tables and counters. My previous dog, who passed away a few years ago, used to “tell on” the cats. He’d come get me and point with his nose at the “bad kitty” up on the shelves knocking things down. The cats seemed to figure that out because eventually they either stopped getting up on things or they paid the dog off. :p Either way, the reports stopped but so did the swiping off of knickknacks. I do miss that dog. He was incredibly grumpy, but very intelligent.

My current dog is good natured but a complete nightmare. I have been training dogs and even cats and even a goldfish the many years of my life. But in all of our years together, I can’t even get her to do one single thing or stop doing anything (when she is not on a leash) if her whim does not coincide with mine. My husband has had only marginally more luck getting her to comply and cooperate even when we are trying to do something nice for her. I got her when she was already an adult, about 4 or 5. She has her ways, and that’s that. Every week there’s a new contest of wills between her and the rest of the family. I swear she’s writing her memoirs and laughing at us all!

Mine slid off the couch onto hardwood floors, an approximate 25" drop. Had the Apple Leather case on it and no damage (cracks) to the front or backside glass or the stainless steel bumper. As an aside, though, I accidentally threw my phone into my pocket, which had my keys in it, and there is now a hairline scratch down the front center. Not terrible though. So, beware the keys!

I see not having a case will make you more careful with your phone. I use to always use an bulky otterbox and would drop my phone every other day, sometimes multiple times a day and I think it was because I had a case and knew I didn't have to worry about it as much. I've gotten tired of the very bulky cases and decided to go with a thin non otterbox case on the X. In the 2 weeks of having the X, I've only dropped my phone once. I kind of want to go caseless, but haven't made up my mind yet. I've been so against getting AC+, but after reading all these threads and using a thin case, I've been entertaining the idea. Haven't decided yet though as AC is so expensive and seems to be a ripe off.

So the key point is: you still have only two accidental demage coverage right? So if you break your screen twice then you have to pay 299 afterwards...

So I decided to take my case off last week (which was so much nicer), but earlier this week I had it on the bathroom counter and it slid off and bounced on the tile floor then slid a couple feet. I was scared to even look at it, and the dust made it looked like it shattered the camera glass. Luckily the only damage is a small scratch on the back, no cracks!

Well thanks to my sodding spasms, my X has had the pleasure of being hurled across the floor more than a handful of times and dropped several times.

Fortunately the drops haven’t been any higher than about three feet but it has been onto hard surfaces a couple of times.

So far, not a scratch, it still looks like new surprisingly. But I’m not worried anyway, that’s why I pay for AppleCare, so I don’t have to concern myself with things like breaking it.

Not that I’m careless but anything can happen with a phone that’s mostly glass.
