There's one thing that I noticed when I'm watching people unbox their iPhone x or taking pictures. Are the phone suppose to do "beeping" flash from the lens? I'm not talking about "normal" flash when taking pictures at night...but the continuous flashing thing. I have not seen my lens continuously flash...

mine doesn't. even with a timer - the countdown shows the number but nothing is beeping or flashing for the front facing camera.

OHHH...is that what it is? When recording?
Infrared sensors, as used on phones (and public toilet flushers, etc) have two components: an infrared LED source, and a sensor or camera to receive its reflected light.

Many common cameras can see infrared light and render it into their video.

You can take pictures of, say, the IR source on an automatic toilet, and it'll look like a grayish LED.

What you're seeing in the iPhone X videos is the FaceID sensor package attempting to get a fix on the person's face. It looks for the owner's face when you pick it up so that it can decide whether to unlock or not.
