Apple haven’t removed TouchID , it’s still present in the flagships released today namely the 8 and 8+.

I understand it's not entirely removed, but it will be for the OLED model. And we don't know the future of touch ID at the moment, my point was does Apple entirely rely on face ID for the future and how it overall matures/evolves with technical facets.

It’s been well documented on MR that Apple are still patenting fingerprint sensing technologies and under the screen scanning, so I’m pretty sure they haven’t thrown TouchID out with the bezels, just that it’s not possible with the X this year.

I don't use Touch ID so doesn't bother me. I'm not thrilled reading the rumor that the X won't have LTE though.

It was a few days ago, I found it in the iPhone news (app). I'll go try to find it again and see if I know how to link it. They were saying that since Qualcomm modems might not be used in the X, due to the legal stuff or something.. that there won't be LTE since you need the modem for that. No one else picked up the story/rumor and there was a remark about maybe some of the first phones would have it and then not the rest. Didn't sound very reliable but still.

Patenting and implementing (Releasing) technology are two different things mind you. But again, we can't speak for the future and what Apple would or could be doing with face ID and or touch ID. Not to mention, documenting on a rumored website is an indicative to what Apple may or may not do. That's called speculation. Furthermore, Apple has many patents that may never become reality and then reported frequently on other sites as well, but that's not influential of something that may or may not happen. That's how technology works, it's a testing to process to determine if it's feasible or not. So stating "Im pretty sure" really isn't consequential of anything Of evidentiary nature.

Really can’t see that tbh, 3G only X, nah, Apple would be laughed off stage.

I agree, only Apple know for sure. I can only summarise or give my honest opinion. Likewise they could have dropped TouchID totally even on the 8 and used FaceID on that (same cameras rumoured) but have gone with TouchID.

If Samsung manage to get scanning under the screen for the S9 in March, I’d stake a lot of money that Apple will do the same this time next year.

IMHO I believe they will use both as 2 factor authentication to make the most secure smartphone out there, just the tech isn’t there just yet.

Thanks for the link but if it was true the X would be obsolete before the word go, I think that’s news for the sake of news.

Yeah I wasn't loosing sleep over it but didn't like reading it :). I can't imagine either but knew that something was going on with the legal stuff so.. it's been in the back of my mind.
Looking forward to tomorrow even though I am not decided how I feel about an upgrade this year.

It's midnight here and I need some sleep! See you all here later, where I will be quietly reading all the posts for days/weeks. :)

This face ID better work a whole lot better than it does on the Samsung for it to be doable. I gave up on the face ID on the S8+ the first week and went back to a password. Actually the iris scan worked better. But it's still a pain to have to hold the phone up to your face when you want to get in, and it can't be weird lighting or a hat on or sunglasses or anything. It's just not practical enough when you need into your phone, I agree with Mossberg on this.

I'd assume if that were true, the X would have been scrapped all together. There is no possible way Apple could release a non LTE phone, especially the phone being elevated as the special anniversary edition.

I'm looking forward to Face ID, having been unable to use Touch ID for the past couple of years due to damage to my fingerprints (from chemotherapy). In fact, I'm using this as my justification for buying the new iPhone!

If Facial Recognition replaced TI i'd get accustomed to it to secure my phone, which in effect translates to using Apple Pay differently. So yeah bring it on

I've decided to take my own advice and sit this year off, letting my MacRumors brothers and sisters test if FaceID is a true improvement over TouchID.

And then if you change your mind, you will have lots of threads discussing the positives and the negatives to weigh out your decision in the future.

I think FaceID will be a great replacement for TouchID if it works as well as rumored. The lack of Pro Motion might actually be the dealbreaker for me for this year's iPhone :(
