I think the people who are the most outraged over the practice of reselling iPhones are themselves the most materialistic. Their frustration comes from the fact that *they* don't have an expensive luxury device and will have to wait to get one while someone who managed to get an early order is taking advantage of that materialism by making a profit.

If we were talking about food, water or shelter I would absolutely share in the outrage and demand that price gouging end. However, since these phones are clearly luxury devices I see no reason to be upset. Just place your order and wait or pay a premium to get it now. Apple will most likely ship your iPhone much sooner than 6 weeks since they always over deliver.

I managed to snag a November 3rd delivery date and I'm tempted to sell. Sure, I'd love to enjoy my new phone but if some hedge fund guy is willing to pay me double--I'll be more than happy to sell it.

Same here. I didn't buy the phone with the intent of selling it, but if someone is willing to give me double for the phone. I'm more than happy to sell it and wait another month or two to get the new iPhone. I'm sure supplies will catch up by the holidays anyway.

Its just a phone but I guess there always has to be someone that can say they got it before everyone else..

Why am I not surprised?

It's sad, but there are wealthy people out there that are willing to fork out that kind of cash just to satisfy their itch. And unfortunately, the scalper benefits from it.
It's all about trotting down to Starbucks and flashing the new "X" on Nov 3rd. Nov 4th, it will be "old hat"...

what's the difference between Apple selling a device that costs $300 to build for $1000 vs someone who buys something for $1100.00 and resells it for $1600.00?
None - it's called capitalism this is how thousands of people earn a living to eat and pay rent every day....

Only an idiot would sell them as a pre-pre order though. These guys selling a spot in Line have no idea if they can get them. So yeah, I agree with you there. Regardless waiting until they are in hand does generate profit, and even $100 is worth it. I make my entire living on eBay (satcom) so maybe I’m a little biased.

Have you invested in bitcoin at all? I know a few eBay "entrepreneurs" who have made a lot more this year on bitcoin.

You don't really believe that the phone costs just $300, if you do then I have a bridge to sell to you. Or maybe you could try get into that lucrative business yourself, it should be a piece of cake.

I'm not concerned. There are people who are *******s and parasites (scalpers), and other people who are morons (whoever buys from the scalper instead of waiting a bit), and I feel fine telling everyone on the internet that they are *******s, parasites and morons. Am I concerned? No. And it's not "free market". It's a combination of free market, greed, and idiocy.

I don't see anyone denying greed plays an element in a free market. Just because someone has more disposable time or income than you doesn't make them a parasite or moron. There are people out there who have so much money that the difference between a $1,000 and $1,500 iPhone is the difference of $10 to $15 to me. I don't blame them for not wanting to wake up in the middle of the night to order a phone if they don't have to in order to get it on day 1.

eBay is a joke for things like these with their fees etc. I sell on Gumtree / CL type sites and always do face 2 face deals.

Can't say that I'm surprised. People trying to cash in on the hype.

The downside is that they by those ordering just to sell them, they push those people who actually want the phone into longer waits.

You of course are entitled to do as you like and I am entitled to make a judgement about materialism and misplaced emotions. Sorry if it makes you defensive but that's how it works.

There you go with another poor analysis...

Maybe that’s the problem. Sounds very entitled

Entitled does not equal a problem, only through a particular lens. If you have the money, you ARE entitled to purchase something.

Sure, I get that entirely. In this particular case, the buyers are making this connection to something they haven't even seen yet. Doesn't make more sense, but rather less.

A familiar platform, loaded with software that you already do use, yet presented in a way that gives you better access to that software is something people have seen. They are familiar with how this works on a yearly basis, they're excited to try it, they may end up not liking it but part of the experience is to see if it meets their expectations.

Nah. I found my niche on eBay and that's more than enough.

But what do you have when eBay or PayPal takes everything you have away? Granted, you probably have a 2% chance that that happens, but it's important to diversify. I realize that if I got employees and scaled 10-fold, I could make half a mil a year on eBay, but I'm happy doing my single op and getting by, but I'm using my free time to learn about cryptocurrency and apply for various jobs on indeed, even with my lack of experience.

This comment makes it all worth it:

It’s really sad that slime like you buy these phones and try to scalp on eBay. Other people could be buying from the store. This is why the world is the way it is. Slime.

The slime oils the machines, buddy!

For those already registered on eBay and have ticked the eBay Bucks link at one point in time, eBay is offering 8% back today. So if you can win yourself one at $1350 or less, that's the same as paying in store with tax. Granted, you're supposed to pay your use tax on your state personal tax return but few do. Carrier-specific ones should be less except Verizon, and I wouldn't trust anyone selling one as unlocked unless it were Verizon. I believe AT&T has a 14-day remorse period where they won't unlock it after purchase, and most of these hustlers are buying them on carrier payment plans.
