I guess I’m unusual as I work in the real world - some people know it as the “outdoors”. I’m often in a Forest or along the coast where, when there is signal, it’s iffy to say the least and as such will drain my battery faster than usual.

I have carried battery packs and solar chargers etc before but it’s a pain in the butt to fiddle with this stuff in the rain or in a howling force 9 gale. And it’s something else that can and has gone wrong. I’m often out on my own too and if something unfortunate happens a phone can be a life saver. It’s not quite the same as discovering a dead battery at ones office desk.

Out of all of this the most useful thing that I have is an Apple Watch. Really useful and convenient when you are out in the real world :)

what about it.. #applewatch

When one is out and about in nature, (I used to go on 3 day camping trips as a boy scout lol) one has to adapt to their surroundings. Whatever that looks like for the individual.:)

Which is exactly what I’m doing. However, it sounds like you need to get out more... lol.

One example - it allows me to easily and conveniently filter my calls and notifications with all my kit on. In the past I’d often miss things because in a howling gale etc I couldn’t hear the call/notification or couldn’t get to the phone in time. Or, when I did, it turned out to be unimportant thus wasting time.

If I get an inquiry or order customers really appreciate an immediate response. These can come in via a phone call or social media (it’s a modern world). If I miss an inquiry, even if it’s just by minutes, it amazing the number of people who then don’t answer or have moved onto something else. I’ve made money from using an Apple Watch.

In the past I’ve used bluetooth headsets and the like but they aren’t as convenient and have obvious disadvantages.

These days getting out and about is staying dry in the rain. Remember camping is outing and outing is out...:) with a “waterproof” phone and a battery I don’t worry about about juice.

Lol - that’s pretending to go out. It’s playing outside and not working outside. There’s a BIG different - sorry, it is not being out in the real world.

Well you’re is not the real world either. Being in the elements for days at a time without any access to the comforts of civilization, unless you’re in the military, is not the job most people have either. So if that’s the type of job you have, you have to take special preparations.

one of my colleague got an XR. She also put an apple silicon case on it.

I tried it in the real world and one handed usage is definitely a big-NO for XR with or without the case. X/XS fits like a glove in hand compared to XR for my hand size.

If you’ve chosen a profession where you spend long periods outside in the wilderness then great but there is no superior use case here. If I go camping with the family I take a power bank and have my phone turned off most of the time. Having a battery that lasts days would be good but those of us who just work in offices with access to power may not desire an urgent solution if we are charging phones each day. There’s many definitions of ‘real world’ and I don’t think anybody truly experiences every element of it.

It’s nothing to do with “superior use case”. My main grip is this statement...

“However, in today's day and age, there is no reason for dead battery”.

Surely it’s obvious that people can have different use cases not “superior”. I’ve had issues with dead iPhone batteries in the past. Sure, you can fiddle with battery packs and strap solar chargers to your head (have you tried using one of those things in a Scottish winter?) but for ME these solutions are not as convenient or useful as a phone with a decent battery life.

In the past there have been plenty of threads and people wishing for a longer battery life so it’s obviously not just me.

There are many definitions of “real world” but these days I don’t see many people living in it.

I’d say most use their phones one-handed simply for scrolling and basic interaction with the phone, but anything with typing a text messages or responding to an email, obviously no matter what size the phone, users will use two hands in those situations. (Unless someone of course is dictating).

For me XR is completely useless at its current form even though it is "tech" better than X. But its only my point of view as I have different needs than the XR fans.

I really don't care about the XR upgrades at this point when I cannot use the phone one handed and even hold it comortably with one hand, moreover I cannot imagine carrying XR in my pocket and for me - even the X/XS size is already on the very thin edge of doing so and I wish my X was a bit smaller (yes - I would gladly switch it to its 4.7 version - maybe next year when they will introduce something like that).

I can type all the text on X one handed (no problem at all) and use it constantly only with one hand no matter what app I use (impossible for me with XR unless I wanted to get my wrist broken after a while) - I use two hands mostly with X when shooting photos to hold the phone steady.
I was 100% sure I would buy XR when I checked the tech specs but it all changed when I got one into my hand.

I see XR as incomplete product - Im pretty sure the second gen of XR will be the much more expected and better phone.
Excuse my sarcasm but today I imagine Apple wise guys sitting around the table saying - hey folks, we have this premiere this year and as its only one year from our last "revolution" - we came up with A12 and better camera on XS and some more memory, the Face ID ver 2 works a bit faster as Mr John removed few lines of code that was not needed, hmmm what else do we get to survive the next year with stock holders? Ok, obviously the XS probably wont sell as expected because the X users will not switch as the upgrades are not worthy the new price (so it would be better to remove X from sales), hmmm so, then we need to raise the sales hits on something else and bit different - lets get A12, XS cut camera, put some more memory option (128 GB is great sales catcher), we cannot use OLED obviously so we put LCD for the one last time but lets make it huge so we finally get the space for the right battery and work time and along the way lets just skip the whole ergonomy thing (and Jobs rolled over twice at this point, Im pretty sure ;) ).

Still - I will be waiting for smaller "XS" tech sized phone that would fill the 8/SE size gap market as it would be the perfect product for me, meanwhile the X does its job and I truly believe that the phones should be introduced once in 3-4 years (not yearly) to cut this "marketing" moves and so focus on real usefull progress and upgrades.

For me if both phone were the same price I’d go for the X for a few reasons. One (and most importantly to me) that display, it’s everything I’ve thought an iPhone OLED display would be. On a related note it also has 3D Touch, while haptic touch mimics a lot of the features it doesn’t get all of them (can’t 3D Touch an app on the home screen and bring up shortcuts on the XR for example). Third thing related to the display is the size of the bezel is noticeably smaller on the x (though admittedly I find myself only noticing this because I already had the X last year and the XS this year, if I hadn’t I’m sure it’d be a non issue).

For me the other big piece is the camera, specifically portrait mode. On the X it can capture portraits of people, objects, animals and almost anything you want whereas on the XR it can only do people (though I admit I wish I could take wide angle portrait mode photos on the Xs).

The last piece (and this is purely superficial and doesn’t actually make a difference or factor into that decision for me in any meaningful way) is that the bands on the iPhone X being stainless steel match my stainless steel Apple Watch.

I had same thoughts about tech in XR and get the latest.. but that phone is Huge to be used in 1 hand, pockets, running.

I am definitely getting the X or XS unless some new smaller model is released.

On a different note, should i get a used SE for cheap & get a new released iPhone in Sep19.

If you are limited to X or XR, definitely XR.

Not only it can be used longer through iOS cycles (A12 bionic is a big step up from the A11 - check the reviews), the battery is also a monster! I don't know how OLED screen on X/XS doesn't trump the LCD screen on the XR in terms of battery life, maybe its lower resolution that helps. My XR lasts 2-3 hours longer than my colleagues XS and I literally have 7-8 hours of active screen time for work.

The form factor is perfect for my hand and I once used SE & 8. The LCD (for me) is enough, unless you consumed a lot of media in your phone. LCD also won't give you burn-ins and induce nausea like some cases in X/XS's OLED. I'm personally waiting for Apple to perfect their Micro-LED technology which has the best of both worlds. (though I don't really have much expectation after seeing them killing AirPower)

But, if you really need that double camera and 3D touch (yes, I missed it especially on WhatsApp where I can peek without ticking the read symbol), you should spend more and get the XS. Too much compromise right now for the X.

I'll take X over Xr any day.
Too many advantages (screen, resolution, cameras, build quality, aesthetics) vs slightly faster cpu in Xr that you won't even notice.

It’s all subjective eh? I’d wager the build quality is the same considering this is Apple and personally I think the XR looks better but everybody would buy the same phone if we all agreed :)

I’ve had in the past the 6S and 7 in Plus sizes and went with the X when it came out. My only knock is I wish it was bigger though I don’t miss the Plus from the standpoint of putting it into my pocket. If the 2019 version of the R gets OLED and Portrait, I might consider that as the successor to my X instead of the new Max just because I think the R sounds like the size sweet spot.

Xr has a larger screen, much better battery, slightly better camera, faster CPU and GPU. Build quality is also premium. The resolution is lower but overall the screen quality is high (vibrant colours, good contrast, no PWM).

So not a smart choice taking X over Xr.

iPhone X battery is garbage indeed

It won’t. OLED is not expected for all of Apples latest (More expensive) iPhone models until 2020. As far as the dual camera, that’s more likely specifically for the 2019 XR.

The dual camera really should have been on the current XR and I’m glad to see Apple could be bringing it this year. The lack of dual camera was one of the reasons I end up with an 8+ over the XR. It felt like a classic example of Apple holding a feature back to capitalise on it the following year as they’ve so often done.

I’ll be in the market for the 2020 XR variant though by the time I’m interested in upgrading so maybe OLED will be with us by then? It should be considering the market has decided it’s standard even if the LCD’s currently are brilliant.
