iPhone X ringer gets lower when you lift the phone?

Earlier in the day I had trouble finding the auto-brightness setting (thanks for the help guys!). Now I noticed that when you get a phone call and pick up the phone in your hand, the ringer volume goes down. Can I turn off this behavior?
