On the X, if you enable double click for Apple Pay, it makes the screen feel laggy to turn off as it’s waiting for a second click. Try toggling the Double Click option and comparing the smoothness of turning the screen off. I’ve had to turn off double click so will have to go to Wallet whenever I want to use Apple Pay.

You can add wallet to control center to make getting to wallet a bit quicker for you since you won’t be using the double click.
