Even if money was literally no object to you and you'd rather have someone else pre-order for you - there is no guarantee that person will actually have one on launch day.

So you'd be a fool to buy one.

i'm surprised ebay allows those auctions.

Good point, I always thought a rule was you could only sell things you actually have in your possession.

They don't allow it, you must report the listings

you are allowed to post pre sale items if it follows these rules: (taken from eBay site https://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/pre-sale.html)

  • Guarantee that the item will be available for shipping within 30 days from the purchase date. Be sure to clearly state this information in your listing.

Clearly indicate in the listing that the item is a presale item.

The handling time specified in your listing should reflect the time from the end of the listing until the item is shipped to the buyer. Be sure to specify the correct handling time in your listing.

    Pre-release items

For pre-release items and their accessories, we may block listings until there are no more than 30 days to the release date of the item.
Pretty much if the item is going to be available within 30 days and you have a reasonable case that you'll have it within then, it is allowed. You have to refund the buyer if the item is not available in the disclosed time frame.

Interesting, thank you.

how can you sell something that isn't out yet?
Its Fake news.
The parts are most likely available on the chinese black market. And finished units can also have been pulled of the conveyer belt at the factory. And the first shipments to Apples Europe warehouses have reportedly already taken place, so plenty of places to obtain new units.

People already buying iPhone X off ebay over 1500 even 2000..

I imagine the dollar amounts will even supersede over $2000. Wait until the preorders go live, then you will really start to see the listings fluctuate higher.
