its because I can then ship it abroad so that my brother could use it. i would rather not go with Verizon or sprint or whatever. don't want the phones name to be tied with some carrier.
 
Last year some free was out 4 weeks after initial launch. Same goes for the 6S as well. I take it sometime in December we may expect to see some free models
 
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were made available for the SIM-free version on the release day itself!

But isn't it that if you buy the Verizon version -that is GSM and CDMA compatible- you just need to install any SIM in any part of the world with GSM/CDMA and you're done?
 
might be. but i will feel more comfortable with the sim-free. it is just the way it is and i have been buying all iPhones sim free so got used to it.
