I have read several articles about how to temporarily disable Face ID on an iPhone X, specifically by pressing the volume up/down button + the side button until the power off screen appears. Hitting Cancel on that screen is supposed to cause a password to be required to unlock the phone.

However, that doesn't work for me since Face ID unlocks the phone even from that screen after hitting Cancel. Is there a setting that needs to be changed which will allow Face ID to be temporarily disabled?

Thanks for any help!

Er, why the hell would you wanna disable FaceID even just temporary?.. Why even have the iPhone X?..

This wouldn't happen to me, but...if someone confiscates your iPhone X and you don't want to be forced to unlock it...know what I mean?

I'm talking about a legal situation, perhaps.

Just keep your eyes closed. Unless you’re a school kid in which case stop using your damn phone in class.

No, not a school kid. Here in the States the courts have ruled that your password falls under the self-incrimination statutes whereas TouchID or FaceID do not. At least, that's how I understand it.

Passcode is an information inside your brain and you have every right to remain silent. But the cops can force you to do some actions including put your fingers on the Touch ID sensor or simply put the phone in front of your face.

(Anyway, will the cops always follow the law?)
