I have an iPhone X that I paid for completely when I bought it last year. I am thinking about getting the XS which is available for pick up at my local Apple store on the morning of 9/21. Rather than going through the hassle of selling my X through CL or Swappa, I was thinking about just trading in to Apple. But, here is my question:

When I go to reserve the iphone XS online at Apple.com, I go through the process and it says trade in my old phone, etc. I enter my serial number in and get a quote of $525. It indicates they will send me a trade in kit. I've heard a lot of horror stories about Brightstar so I'd rather just trade it in at the time I pick up my new phone. Do I have to do the trade in kit or can I just being in my X and have them apply it toward the price of the XS when I pick it up in store??

Thanks!

Just bring it in. When I did it they just took the phone from me, gave me a gift card, and then rang up the new phone and used the gift card.

I'm curious what feature on the XS is worth it for you to not keep your X?

Honestly, the news of T-Mobile's extended range LTE is pretty huge for me, there are a lot of places where my coverage on T mobile is spotty at best and get frustrating. And, I forgot to mention I am going from the X to the XS Max...(sorry)

Thanks, will this work even if I have preordered the new phone online for instore pickup?

it's my understanding yes but you might get a store gift card not money off since you already paid for it. if you are cool with that possibility then go for it. i mean that's what Brightstar was going to give you anyway. I suppose if you have the order deets to show how you paid and you have the card used with you you could ask if there's anyway to give you a credit back to your card but don't count on it being possible

Ah yes. I failed to realize that you were preordering for pick up. When I did it I was a walk in. Lined up on release date.

Dang. That’s kind of what I suspected. Hope that my card would not be charged until pick up and they could apply credit or gift card to the new phone and then finalize my purchase on my CC with the reduced amount.

Always nice to have both old and new phones in hand at the same time until you're sure the new one is a keeper IMO (quality control lottery, etc.). I'm not comfortable giving up the old one until I know its replacement meets my standards.

doubt there's that kind of mechanism in the software since you are technically buying and 'selling' at two different stores. but like I said, bring the paperwork and ask. you might get a no but you definitely will get one of you don't try
