While hundreds of customers are lined up at Apple's retail stores across the United States today for a chance to get their hands on an iPhone X, that doesn't appear to be the case in the states of Oregon and Washington today.

MacRumors has received multiple tips from readers who claim Apple's stores at University Village, Bellevue Square, Southcenter, and Alderwood in the Seattle area have turned away walk-in customers wishing to purchase an iPhone X since opening today.

At least five Twitter users have said likewise, including one at Pioneer Place in Portland, with store employees reportedly telling customers that iPhone X inventory is limited to those who pre-ordered the device on Apple's online store.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said iPhone X would be available at Apple retail stores today starting at 8:00 a.m. local time, but he didn't clarify if all locations would be receiving stock in time for launch day. The answer would appear to be no.

Even where the iPhone X is available, supplies are likely extremely limited and going fast on a first come, first served basis. At some locations, customers have been lined up since early this week for a chance to purchase the device.

Apple forecasted that its revenue in the current quarter will be between $84 billion and $87 billion. Even the low end of that range would smash Apple's all-time record for revenue in any quarter, suggesting that iPhone X sales will be very strong.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was at Apple's Palo Alto store in California on Friday morning to celebrate the iPhone X launch, as he usually does for every iPhone launch, according to a video shared by CNBC moments ago.

Apple did not immediately respond to our request for comment about iPhone X availability in the Seattle area. We'll update this article if we hear back.

Update: A source who wishes to remain anonymous claims the iPhone X is not available for walk-in customers to purchase in Oregon as an anti-scalping measure, since it is a sales tax-free state. Washington is also affected since a reciprocity agreement generally allows Oregon residents to pay no sales tax in that state as well.

A handful of MacRumors readers and Twitter users have claimed the iPhone X is not available for walk-in customers in Delaware, which also doesn't charge sales tax. Alaska, New Hampshire, and Montana may also be affected as sales tax-free states, although Apple doesn't have any retail stores in Montana.

Glad to know since I am planning to play with the X in store today during lunch time. My packages are coming in 3 weeks. I don't like the store during launch day - too crowded.

Just back from playing with one in the Sprint store next to my office. I have to admit, I didn't miss the home button at all. And that screen!! I didn't pre-order, and am now having a bit of remorse.

I had a reservation at Christina mall in Delaware and they said they didn’t receive any stock for walk ins. They though it was cause Delaware is a tax free state and they usually get a lot of resellers.

I was one of those customers at their Alderwood Mall location in Lynnwood. Roughly 30 people in line were told to try online for in-store stock tomorrow morning at 6am. I ended up going to AT&T in Everett at the Everett Mall and was able to get my hands on the X I wanted. There were only five customers with at least that many iPhones. More 256s than 64s.

Confirmed.Waited in line starting at 4:00 AM while the snow fell at the Southcenter Apple Store (just South of Seattle.) Apple store employee told us at 6:00 AM that no Washington or Oregon Apple stores would have any iPhones for walk in customers. They said it was a policy the Washington and Oregon stores had decided on. So if you’re in the PNW you’re SOL at Apple stores for launch day.

After trying to order at midnight last week only to have the Apple store app not let me in until 10 after and then being turned away from the Apple store even after Apple stated they would have phones available in their stores on launch day this will be the first year that I will not be getting a new iPhone on launch day. The ten year streak had to end sometime I guess.

Yep, I stopped by University Village just to see if it was crazy. There was no line, so I parked and inquired. They got no walk-in inventory for today, but their BOPIS would go live tomorrow at 6am. The store was damn near empty.

Good! These in store phones should be going to people who have already ordered them...I was up at 3am a week before and paid...why should my phone be delayed and instead they are shipping to stores for people to walk in and buy?

Am I missing something here? What in the article shows that there’s no availability in Seattle?

(Reading this on my iPhone with tired eyes so maybe I’m not seeing something)
Correct. No availability at any Seattle area  stores for walk in customers.

Last year when I was trying to get my 7 plus, the supply sucked in the Seattle area too. Hmm.

I agree. However apple has to impress wall street, and lines on release day is what wall street expects.

Can confirm the University Village (Seattle) store did not have any available to purchase. They said that reservations will open at 6AM to purchase tomorrow.

No Phones in any Springfield Illinois stores for walk ins not even Best Buy.

That explains why my ad got hit up by 10+ "I'll buy emails/texts." Sold my reseller one I got today via UPS for $2250

Maybe I should post my AT&T one instead

I have this strange feeling that the Northwest allotment of iPhone Xs went to San Francisco.

Wonder what makes San Francisco so much better than other areas.
