What country are you in? Here in a Canada all iPhones you buy from Apple come unlocked and plus ALL phones as of December 2017 will be unlocked for FREE and phone sold after December 2017 will come unlocked out of the box, it’s a new law here. Not sure about others counties.

Go to the apple store pay full price use your Indian sim when you go back.

It will work.

Do I tell the store guys that I want an unlocked version of the iPhone X ? is the unlocked model available on apple.com ?

Right now the Sim-Free Model is not yet available in the U.S. So even if you ask them you want an unlocked version, they are going to ask which carrier. Just tell them you want the AT&T/T-mobile model but buying it as Device only. Technically speaking any phone purchased full price at the Apple store or apple.com unlocked. Now does India have CDMA Network? If it does not that T-mobile or AT&T model will do just fine.

Hi, I was thinking of doing this when I travel from UK to USA shortly. Can I just pay the full price via credit card or will they insist on any other details to setup the sim?

For a world phone (GSM and CDMA), ask for the full-price/device-only Verizon phone. Otherwise, ATT or T-Mobile (GSM).

Can use the Apple Store app for in-store pick-up order, just click on "Activate Later".

You can just pay the full price and they will mark that device as "Device Only". You can then remove the sim card that came with it and stick your UK Sim card and will work just fine.
