can anyone explain this!today i was just using my X normally while charging and it stops at 86% i felt like its a little warm so i put it down for a while and as soon as it cooled down it charges back again but that was like 30+ mins so basically it charge again when it was completely cooled down, thats crazy i never had like this happen to my 7plus and 6plus.is this happening on the 8 and 8 plus too?

If it’s because of heat, I imagine this happens on all iOS devices - they have for a long time contained thermal protections, where if the device determines it’s running too hot it will turn off and show a warning message about needing to cool down if you try to power it up. This can happen pretty easily in hot climates if you’re using the device outside in direct sunlight, for instance.

The difference might be that the iPhone X heats up more easily than previous iPhones due to its construction.

yes the older devices will notify you that it so hot esp when expose to the sun but its not like this though on the X it will actually stop the charging procedure when it get so hot.when you charge it will get hot even when you are not using it normal to all phones

My point was, since all iOS devices have thermal protections they will no doubt all stop charging if they get too hot. The iPhone X just happens to get hot more easily.

I don’t have experience with the 8 series iPhones so I don’t know how hot they get, but they do share a similar glass construction as the X which means worse heat dissipation than an all-aluminum design like the previous iPhones.

yeah i agree.it might be because of wireless charging?

It’s a good thing- will prolong your battery life. I’ve noticed that when fast charging using USB C some times it gets warm enough to dim down the OLED panel - possibly to prevent damage to either it or to the battery. Personally I’m ok with that, I’ll take component life over anything else any day of the week!

The Iphone X (and 8/8+ also) may be more susceptible to this issue. Previous Iphones (5 to 7) had metal backs which dissipate heat much better then the glass back. Granted most people put cases on their phones but the metal back would help a bit. The glass will hold the heat in and increase the "over heating warning". I've only had it happen 1-2 times while running the Navigon GPS app while driving in the summer.

I am in the UK. Lots of posts online of IPhone X getting hot. I upgraded from IPhone 6 to IPhone X about 3 weeks ago. At first, all was fine with the battery, charging, and heat. Yesterday, noticed that the phone was warm, and battery draining fast, even when not being used. Never had these problems with my 6, or previous 4. Also, when using my car charger, the phone was showing charging, but not increasing the battery level. At home, on the mains charger, it took about 5hrs to go from 25% to full. I was wondering if I had bought a bad phone! Checked out the internet, and found loads of similar problems. Various fixes found, but I tried one which seemed most appropriate. It relates to the apps. Says go into settings, general, background apps refresh. Turn this OFF. This solved all my problems, cold phone, and no charging problems. Seems like my apps were still buzzing away, draining the battery, and making the phone hot, even when not being used. Hope this helps. Thanks, David Bennett.

All iOS devices will slow or stop charging if it becomes too hit. It's extremely bad for battery health to get hot while charging.

The X has a small surface area and is made glass. Not ideal for heat dissipation.
