I’m looking for your advice! :)

I’m torn between 128 and 256GB version of iPhone XR. I currently own iPhone 6S 64GB and I’ve had it almost 3 years now and reached 64GB capacity, having to delete things all the time to make space. I hate the idea of iCloud storage so prefer to store photos locally. I take lots of photos, less videos but it happens (fun ones from holidays or parties etc.). They occupy around 40GB of my storage currently.

Do you think I should go for 128 or 256GB versions? I’m thinking if I plan on keeping the new phone for 2-3 years, I might easily reach 128GB with current technology going forward and taking more and more space. Or is 256GB an overkill? It does seem a lot but maybe then I could really just not care about storage anymore and never reaching 128.

Thank you everyone!

Opt for the 256 GB. If you’re even remotely concerned that you might fill the 128 GB, then it’s a ‘safe bet’ to take the higher storage, especially the way software updates are far more consuming in storage today, in addition to media, photos, etc. You might as well ‘future proof’ your iPhone the best you can with the storage and it’s not something you will have to think about later on.

I'm a bit concerned that I'll spend £100 more on storage I won't even fill up... I mean it took me almost 3 years to fill 64GB up. 256GB seems like such a massive storage! Thoughts?

But you just said:

I might easily reach 128GB with current technology going forward and taking more and more space.”

Again, _Only_ you know your data usage, if you think you’re going to our fill the necessary storage space at 128GB, then why not opt for the higher storage, that way you don’t have to worry about it in the future.

I also started filing up my 64GB just recently after 2-3 years and bought a 256GB Xs Max. Without any backup restoring (started on fresh), I have already used 70GB lmao

I mostly store photos. I'd say go for the 128GB because if you happen to fill it, there are numerous cloud based storage apps, besides iCloud, that are much easier to use. For example Google Photos gives you unlimited storage for photos, so you can keep them there.

But this is only if price is important to you. Otherwise, I'd have still picked up the 256GB.

If you use a lot of iCloud (or other cloud) storage, then 128 is fine. If you do not have much cloud storage (like me), then get 256.

I wrote this a few months ago...and different storage option than OP’s questions...but you can plug in numbers and compare:

Let’s say you keep your phone for 3 years.

50GB iCloud = $0.99.....over 3 years = $35.64

200 GB = $2.99.....over 3 years = $107.64

DIFFERENCE = $72 over 3 years. (I won’t even compare free ICloud storage because no one has this.)

(I won’t even go to 2 TB for this comparison.)

From Apple site, price difference b/w 64GB and 256GB Xr is $150. (Max difference in cost for Xr.)

Now, resale value difference b/w 64GB and 256GB for iPhone 8+ and X are: (using Verizon trade-in value)

8+ $395 (64) and $440 (256) Difference = $45

X $515 (64) and $585 (256) Difference = $70

(I will pick average difference of $60 for this comparison.)

So, by going with iCloud storage (200GB) and 64GB Xr...you pay $72 more for iCloud but saved $150 on the device cost itself. Profit = $78.

If you went with 256 GB Xr but stayed with 50GB iCloud, you save $72 on iCloud but spend $150 more on device. Cost = $78.

BUT, you have to figure in the RESALE VALUE. And that “SAVINGS/PROFIT” from buying 64GB Xr is getting less and less...around $18 ($78 - $60).

So, grand profit of $18. Of course, this will decrease IF you decide to keep your phone longer than 3 years.

IS IT WORTH IT to save $18 by going with 64GB? YMMV.

I pay for iCloud because otheriwise my photos won’t all fit on any phone. Do you use iCloud? Without iCloud I am using 64ish gb of space on my max. When I travel I add movies etc for airplanes. But right now I don’t have that stuff on there. I don’t have any music on right now because I reset my phone but I do need to add that back. 256 is plenty for me.

128. The price increase from 128 to 256 for $100 is effectively $150 from 64 to 256 like xs/xs max is unkind. 64 to 128 for $50 is “kind” (ie reasonable). You won’t recoup that when you sell the phone. I think you’ll be fine.
