On Apples main website (landing page) there is now a prominent promotion for a $449 XR with a trade in at the top of the page.

This seems like the confirmation that it’s not doing as well as Apple hoped, can anybody else remember Apple offering something like this during one of the busiest shopping seasons on a new flagship product?

    * $449 reflects price of iPhone XR after trade-in of iPhone 7 Plus.

    $300 trade in for 7plus

Apple is not about to lower its price before Christmas. They fooled you!

The promo is the they're giving an extra 70-100 dollars per trade-in. If you're not trading in an iPhone, you get nothing. As promotions go, it's a pretty terrible one. It's aimed only at people they're trying to get to jump from a 6 or 7 to the XR or XS.

Yep, that worked for me, going from a 6s to the XR! :)

Not really a promotion, IMO. You can easily sell the 7+ for $300.

i think this is pretty clever on apple's part. They don't have to call it a sale price or reduce the price of the phone AND they get a phone they can refurb and sell again!

for example if they get a iphone 7 plus for $300 they can refurb it and they sell them for $479!

worked for me getting $150 off for an iphone 6 that was just collecting dust cause it didn't have good reception phone and wifi

i wouldn't call that a terrible deal at all!

Market is pretty flooded may take some time. Convenience is factored into it but also the apple tax on everything they

The $300 that they pay you for the 7+ is likely worth a lot more than that to Apple.

    1. They've successfully sold another late model iPhone which is more likely to keep the user engaged with iOS and Apple products.

    2. They've successfully removed a potential switcher to Android from the equation.

    3. They can use the 7+ for refurb parts and shells for other markets or replacement devices.

It's a win-win for both the customer and Apple. The user gets a new phone at a lower out-of-pocket cost. Apple locks in the user for a few more years.

The fact that iPhones retain good resale value is the positive flip side of the "Apple tax."

    Great marketing on Apple's part.

They have the advantage in the resale market as they will offer you a warranty.

I guess someone needs to learn how to read fine prints :)

BTW, I traded in my spare 6s+ for a $250 Apple GC yesterday without purchasing a new phone. $300 7+ seems little low, it should be at least $350.

    They “got” me twice

Traded in 7+ 128 for $285 refund on XR (volume up felt different recently, still worked fine but I figured it would be on its way out in 6 months knowing my luck, battery life was terrible on iOS 12 even with a battery replacement) and my contract X 64 for $500
(gift card on standby for a 2019 or later upgrade)

AND continuing OS support and feature improvment for years after a phone model is released.

Eh what? Trade in required, seems to me like Apple is struggling to get users of older iPhones to upgrade to it.

Used markets are flooded with 6 and 7s. It took me two weeks to sell my excellent condition unlocked iPhone 7+ 128 with brand new accessories on CL for $350

And I had to go through the hassles of negotiating and then had to take time to meet at a at&t store to verify the phone. I actually met with two other people before that and they were anal enough to reject my phone due to very tiny normal hairline scratches from usage on the bottom of the phone.

It you are going to upgrade your phone anyway do yourself a favor and just trade it in. If you need the cash for something else then sell it.

Do you just go to the Apple store and tell them you want a trade in but dont want to purchase a new phone? I was thinking of getting a series 4 and if they’ll give me a gift card for the $200 there offering for a 6s I could use it towards that..

Yeah, I walked in and asked if I could just trade in for a gift card without buying a new phone since already had one. They had no issues and their system allowed that option and the trade in price came up at the higher rate.

Factoring in AC and tax, you’re still paying close to $700 on the XR. Add a case or some other accessory and there you go.

Yeah they were recently passed over by Microsoft for largest market cap. Soon it'll be Qualcomm then straight to the bottom, haha

I think all of us would still like to own a company that was just surpassed by Microsoft!

This isn’t one of those threads. Although it seems like you can’t have a discussion of the XR on macrumors without it going one or another way.

This is a “how will Apples future plans with iPhones go and was this indeed a reason they are stopping reporting numbers at quarterly reports”.

Apple is offering an -official- promotion after Black Friday in the holiday season for a smartphone they just released. This is rare, and a big deviation from the past. It really doesn’t matter you can get more on Ebay or swappa or a dark alley, it matters it’s an official company promotion on an essentially brand new product, that isn’t apples style.

I trust that Apple will be just fine. LOTS of companies do not post their numbers, Apple was way over priced in the stock market and I am glad I sold mine a month ago. The China trade deal is what scared me, not the phones sales.

I imagine Apple will be just fine too, it’s just a strange move from a company like them, if you don’t feel like acknowledging it that’s completely fine. :)

There’s been rumors Apple will slash the price, this is probably as close to that as will officially happen I imagine.
