What earned it the crack?

It was in my locker at the gym, I pulled the gym bag out and the phone went out flying onto the floor, probably 4 ft from the ground. It is my fault it broke, but I think my previous phones would have held up better. I'm just glad for Apple Care, so it shall be restored soon enough to its crackless self.

Did you forget the sarcasm tag? How is the iPhone 7 new at the end of 2018?

Because I can go get a new one from Apple, with all new components, a battery with 0 cycles and 100% health, new screen, etc.

Why do you define "new" so narrowly to mean only the latest generation of iPhones? It's not like Apple stopped making new iPhone 7s in November 2017 - they still make them new.

My samsung s8 active is glass, and still not a scratch after 2+ years. I have thrown it 30 foot across a parking lot just to try to break one... and nope. Why can't someone make a phone like this again so I can justify switching from att dang it

Why hello dead thread and 1-post Samedung troll. And no, your S8 Active is plastic:

And per Tech Radar, your claim of not a scratch is utterly unfounded (never mind the common knowledge that plastic vs asphalt or concrete will result in scratches):
