I was dead set on the iPhone Xs or Xs Max. I thought after today, I'd be choosing between the two.
In the end, it was a simple decision: I wanted the Max. Couldn't resist the screen! But then....

I started to think. My vision became blurred. My head was swirling. I started having visions of Johnny Ive talking with his hands.

What about the iPhone Xr?
What has happened. I didn't expect this. What is going on.

- The iPhone Xr is the cheapest. Expected.
- Has the best battery of any iPhone EVER by 90 minutes! That is bonkers! Huge win and unexpected.
- Supports wireless charging, I thought it would be omitted. Win!
- Doesn't support 3D Touch, but is able to activate the keyboard cursor....the only reason I use 3D Touch.
- Comes with Gen 2 FaceID. I was sure they would gimp the phone like they did with TouchID on "cheap" iPhones. Another huge win, as I felt the original FaceID system was too slow on the X.
- Has a bigger screen than the iPhone X and 8 Plus
- Has all of the great features I like about the iPhone Plus's cameras aka Bokeh. Also supports the post-shot DOF technique seen in the keynote
- Slightly bigger bezels than the X's, not a dealbreaker. Still attractive.
- Comes in glorious colors
- Lighter than the XS Max by about 15g's, smaller in dimensions (except thickness...sad times)
- Uses a high quality, color accurate LCD display that shouldn't have the annoying color shifting I experienced with my original X.
- PPI is still about 330, which from my experience, is absolutely fine
- Due to a lower resolution display, the phone will age better than other A12 iPhones. Less pixels = smoother operation.

There's probably more, but I'm debating this long and hard. That battery life, man I tell ya! An iPhone that gets NINETY minutes longer than the Plus? Dreams really do come true!

This decision is a tough one, I think I'm going to go drink a beer and get lost in my irrational thoughts.

The PPI sucks for me...I wish they could have made it a little better.

But compared to everything they released the XR seems like it’s a solid phone for the price!

I went from an iPhone X > iPhone 8. PPI didn't change my experience. Hopefully I have the same can be said when I see this in person! But it's true, I am scared about PPI on a larger phone.
*fingers crossed

It’s larger phone than the Plus and PPI is the same as the 8...not sure how your OCD is but I would notice it.

I’m sure most people in my family would have no idea of any PPI differences between the XS and XR

The OCD is strong with this one. I have lots of things I have OCD about, but PPI on iPhones has always been sufficient for me. I've owned and used many phones with higher PPIs and I've never noticed the difference.

Color shifting is a much larger issue for me, that's something I have OCD about. Curious if it's better on this year's model.

I am absolutely leaning towards the Xr as well. For most of the reasons above! I don’t notice things like PPI and don’t really care about LCD vs OLED. Plus that Coral

I'm actually pretty interested in the Xr and I went through pretty much the same thought process.
  • The Max is too big.
  • The Xs is too small.
  • 64GB of memory is too little so I'd have to get the second tier model on any of them meaning almost MacBook money if I were to get the Max.
  • I REALLY like the colors.
  • It has basically everything besides an OLED screen and a dual camera.
That being said I really worry about the camera, I fear that it's notably worse than the X's, and I really use the telephoto lens on my 7 Plus.

The camera is also the biggest question for me. It will be interesting to see the reviews later next month.

You took the thoughts right out of my head, OP. I was set on the Max and literally went through the same exact process while watching the keynote today.

Xr 128gb in white or red for me.

I take the Xr, save 25% from the XS. 128Gb is sufficient for me. I’m a guy, the girls may need more because they selfie anything and everything, everywhere.

Only 15% speed improvements, loss of dual camera and the notch is still there. I see no reason to upgrade my 8 Plus.

I’m considering the XR. It has a better battery than the Max? I currently have the X but want a larger screen. Do you think the screen on the XR would be similar to an iPhone 7?
