The 8 Plus is wider when holding it horizontally due to the aspect ratio, it’s 16:9 whilst the XR and others in the same form factor are 18:9.
You are better off sticking to the XR and getting used to it though, all flagships and most new devices are using this aspect ratio now.

You can’t just post this and not share a comprehensive and detailed post about that upgrade and downgrade cycle you went through.
The 8 Plus (in my opinion) has the best screen of any current iPhone or any future OLED screen iPhone.
XR is a better phone in almost every way.

Your question was mine as well. I ended up selling my XR for a new 8+ as I like the screen better and Touch ID. The XR was a great phone though.
I can beat that I've had half that amount in the last year alone.
